The Park Lane roundabout in Gateshead will re-open on schedule this Friday, 21st August.
Demolition work on the six northernmost spans of the Gateshead Highway flyover has now finished, opening up the space around the junction of the A167 and A184 Felling Bypass.
Our contractors BAM and specialist demolition team from Thompsons are currently working through the seventh span, to ensure the project will be well away from the roundabout when the road re-opens.
They are also having to clear hundreds of tonnes of rubble and scrap steel, then get it all off site, ready to be recycled.
Finally the crushed stone and steel plates that have been protecting the road surface will need to be removed, ready for the road to be washed down for re-opening.
BAM say their works will be complete on Friday, as scheduled, and temporary traffic lights will be put back in place on the roundabout.
The aim is to open the road late in the evening, after the rush hour, when traffic levels are lower, to allow easier re-integration with the surrounding road network.
Anneliese Hutchinson, strategic director for economy, innovation and growth at Gateshead Council, said: “We are delighted to see Park Lane roundabout re-open after this closure period.
“The team on site has delivered a very impressive result. The junction has been truly transformed, and opens up sightlines from the east of Gateshead into the town centre like we’ve not seen since the 1960s.
“We recognise the programme to demolish the flyover around the roundabout has been very challenging for everyone involved.
“It’s not been easy for local residents or businesses, but we want to thank everyone for their understanding while the road closure has been in place over these last four weeks.
“We hope they will appreciate the huge change that has been brought about, which will benefit the whole area for the long term.”

We agree. It's a step in the right direction but more is needed to tackle the problem. Fly tipping has been a big problem all over Gateshead for years.

This is a stark warning: the climate emergency is here, yet the Government moves at a snail’s pace.

It's time for a national strategy: funding cool hubs for vulnerable groups, mandating cooling and ventilation in new homes, supporting drought-affected farmers and heat-proofing NHS facilities.
