Garstang Soroptimists

Garstang Soroptimists Soroptimist International - Women inspiring action, transforming lives. Women working for women and having fun into the bargain. But... we also have fun!

Garstang Soroptimists are an eclectic group of like minded women who gather to help improve the lives of women and girls. We do this through our programme action work, the aim of which is to “Educate”, “Empower” and “Enable”. As a service organisation, our programme action work is practical – we work to raise awareness, we lobby, we publicise issues – but we do also organise some fund raising even

ts. All of these go towards raising the standards of women and girls both in health and education, to help them to take their rightful place in our modern society. We socialise – always willing to try something new, we have guest speakers, we go on trips to theatres and shows and we like to dine out. We are part of an International organisation of kindred women, working together and having fun together for the betterment of others.

Well, that's my bedtime reading for today. Women's Health Strategy for England.
Whilst an updated strategy from the previous Government, it's still relevant to 51% of the population.
Health is wealth, as they say and we, Garstang Soroptimists, want to ensure we raise awareness, advocate, and lobby for good health for all women and girls.
Interested in joining us? Then why not get in touch - we'd love to hear from you.

Today is World Health Day.
Health underpins every aspect of empowerment for all women and girls, from access to education to economic independence and leadership opportunities.
On World Health Day, we’re reminded that health is the foundation for every woman’s future.
From classrooms to careers and leadership roles, when women and girls are healthy, they can thrive.
That’s why Soroptimists are raising awareness of cervical screening and HPV vaccination — vital steps toward preventing cervical cancer and working to eliminate it for good.

Egg-straordinary!
(Sorry, couldn’t resist 🤣).

Yes, we’ve been collecting again, this time to support the Garstang Knit & Natter Group in their quest to deliver knitted eggs to Brian House.

The shout out went out and, before we knew it, 22 eggs were ‘hatched/despatched’ to the shop in Garstang.

Happy days!

And they’re in - yes, we’ve started submitting our Big Plastic Count stats and they make for interesting reading.

We like things that make us think :
Do I need it?
Can I buy loose rather than bagged?
Where can I refill and re-use?
Are there alternative packaging options?
Does it need to be wrapped in plastic?

Biggest plastic usage for this submission was milk cartons!

Submitting the data also offered the opportunity to email the UK Government to lobby for more action around plastic usage/waste - another example of Soroptimism in action.

They say every day is a school day.

Well, it was last Wednesday when four of SI Garstang's members went along to Cardinal Allen High School to conduct mock interviews for Year 11 pupils.

It was a well organised session (all thanks to Lynn O'Conner, the school's Careers Advice and Guidance Officer). Pens were at the ready!

We 'interviewed' 32 pupils, all with a range of talents, experiences and expectations. Hopefully our feedback from the sessions will help them to secure the role or course they are interested in.

Looks like it might be same again next year. Interested in joining us? Drop us a line via our FB page if so - we'd love to hear from you.

Just how difficult is it to take a photo of 40 drain bags?

Well, it’s not easy, but worth it to show off all the hard work that Garstang Soroptimists put into making 40 of the bags. (To match in with our ‘40 for 40’ theme to celebrate St John’s Hospice 40th anniversary).

It’s in the bag, as they say!

If you watched BBC 6pm News tonight (Tuesday 10 March) you may have seen the report on domestic abuse and violence against women. Abuse that all too often ends in the death of a woman.

If it’s made you think about a friend, relative, colleague, or even your own relationship, then why not come along to our Healthy Relationships and Staying Safe event on Wednesday 25th March at 7pm.

Details on how to book a place are on the poster below 👇👇👇👇👇👇👇

Today is International Women's Day.

The theme of this year's International Women's Day 2026 is 'Give To Gain'

We like that - as Garstang Soroptimists we recognise the power of reciprocity and support.

When people, organizations, and communities give generously, opportunities and support for women increase. Giving is not a subtraction, it's intentional multiplication. When women thrive, we all rise.

Whether through donations, knowledge, resources, infrastructure, visibility, advocacy, education, training, mentoring, or time, contributing to women's advancement helps create a more supportive and interconnected world.
