What a wonderful evening we had at this weeks meeting, our members enjoyed a fantastic talk from our guest speaker Donald Paterson from The Seagull Trust who have warmly extended a visit to them in future months.

Here are some interesting facts that we learned about this charity:

1️⃣ Freedom is in the name
Did you know the name “Seagull” was chosen to symbolise freedom from physical constraint? A beautiful reminder of the charity’s mission to make Scotland’s canals accessible to all.

2️⃣ A boat with a royal beginning
Their first Scottish boat, the St John Crusader, was ceremonially renamed and launched in 1979 by the Duke of Hamilton — making their very first voyage one to remember! And the Princess Royal is their patron.

3️⃣ Started by a canal‑loving minister
Seagull Trust Cruises exists thanks to Rev. Hugh Mackay, a dedicated canal enthusiast who believed everyone should be able to enjoy Scotland’s waterways.

4️⃣ Powered entirely by award winning volunteers
No paid staff here — every cruise, every smile, every cup of tea is made possible by amazing volunteers.
In 2007, the Trust received The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the UK’s highest honour for volunteer groups.

5️⃣ Helping save Scotland’s canal heritage
The Trust didn’t just use the canals — they helped revive them by supporting dredging and restoration projects across Scotland.

6️⃣ Fully accessible boats
Their boats are specially adapted with wheelchair access and thoughtful design features, ensuring that everyone can enjoy a peaceful day on the water. [justgiving.com]

Our first meeting of 2026 was a Scottish themed evening with a wonderful taste of burns prepared by the committee for members and visitors.

Our special guest Jen from local business Clan Artisan gave the most fabulous and inspiring talk to us about she’s grown her business , the skills that’s she’s learned in the way and how she personally selects items from makers in Scotland. What an inspiring local business who makes us feel a little prouder to have such talent showcased locally in Stirling.

It certainly brightened our spirits in January and many of our members were delighted to buy a little something from the beautiful wares that were on display. Thank you so much 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿❤️

What a wonderful evening we had this week with our very talented member Stacey, who is the creative director and baking talent behind Staceys Designer Cakes.

The demonstration showed members how versatile sugar craft is and some top tips and tricks to really add detail into your creations at home.

Stacey demonstrated decoration of a ginger bread man from icing using a much loved festive treat, a Terry’s chocolate orange. Thank you so much for sharing your talent and knowledge with us- we enjoyed it very much.

During our delicious rural tea we shared some lovely stories about our dear friend Anne who was the epitome of the rural, she will indeed be sadly missed by us all.

Marion, our wonderful secretary who keeps everything running beautifully and efficiently started her family leave and can’t wait to hear all about their new addition in due course.

Well done to those who entered our competitions ⭐️

Thanks to everyone who attended our meeting last night.

I think that all members agreed that it was another enjoyable evening, with talk from Maggi Allan about the work of Canine Concern Scotland, accompanied by her lovely Therapet spaniel, Jetta. Another very interesting speaker demonstrating valuable volunteer work. Jetta was a complete ⭐️ the entire evening 🐶

Next month we’ll be getting into the festive spirit with a Christmas decorating demonstration by one of our talented members, Stacey 🎄🤶☃️

We look forward to welcoming you next month ❤️

16/10/2025

Our next meeting is Tuesday 21s October at 7.30pm at Gargunnock Community Centre.

We look forward to a talk from Maggi Allan, who will be joined by Jetta, her Therapet cocker spaniel.

For some years now it has been recognised, more and more, that pets are good for us! Indeed, it has been scientifically proven that the mere action of stroking a dog, or cat, slows down the heartbeat, reduces blood pressure, and makes someone who has already suffered a heart attack much less likely to have another. We look forward to hearing more about the wonderful work that this charity does for our community.

Competitions will be held
Lift- Animal ornament
Make- Animal photograph

Our usual rural tea will be served so remember your cup ☕️

As always, thank you for your continued support, raffle prize donations, and help with setting up. Please do get in touch with any ideas for future talks, demonstrations or activities.
