Are you interested in, or know someone who might be curious about learning the ins and outs of running a small market garden?

Thanks to a small grant from Somerset Community Foundation we are able to offer an 8-week-long course that gives individuals an overview of what running a market garden might entail. Designed for people who are out of employment or education, this course is a brilliant place to start if you’re unsure what to do next in your career journey.

We’re starting the next cohort at the end of June, so if you’d like to learn the ins and outs of running a market garden get in touch today. Email Lucy at: [email protected] to find out more. Or visit: https://backtonaturecic.co.uk/market-gardening-programme/

We had so much fun at our latest session at which we’ve learned what plants commonly found around us can be used for cooking and healing our bodies 🌱

We explored the woods and meadows around Vallis Veg and found abundance of plants and trees that are edible, tasty and full of hidden healing properties. We ended the (somewhat cold) evening by enjoying nettle and elderflower cupcakes and herbal teas. Yum 😋

We have several workshops lined-up for this summer, so if you’d like to learn something new, spend time in nature and make new friends, check out our website for more details.

Out tickets are either free or low cost, so choose the right option for you, if cost is ever a barrier. We look forward to having you with us ✨💚🌼

For our second session of the market gardening programme we focused on the infrastructure needed to support our crops to grow. We covered everything ranging from changing the environment and extending the season using polytunnels and fleeces to meshes for pests, physical supports for plants and water infrastructure 🌱 💦 🐛

We had a lovely time stringing up our tomatoes and cucumbers to help them grow and provide a delicious summer harvest! 🍅 🥒

We’re starting the next cohort in July, so if you’d like to learn the ins and outs of running a market garden get in today. Email Lucy at: [email protected] to find out more.

We gave nature a helping hand and built some bird boxes using repurposed and chemical-free timber. Using hand and power tools we build tiny homes so our feathered friends have a space to nest and stay sheltered from the weather and predators 🪺

We have more events coming up this summer including a woodworking session, so if you’d like to practice your drilling and sawing skills, join us then!

Our new market gardening programme is now underway with the first session already behind us! Four participants came to Vallis Veg to be immersed in the world of veg growing 🥕 🥒 🍅

Our participants are looking to find a new direction or are looking to set up their own community garden projects. On day 1 we focussed on learning about the soil and composting 🪱🌱🪏

We prepared beds, did some weeding together and propagated perennial kale. We also took some soil samples to learn about soil structure. Throughout the 8 weeks we will cover a broad range of topics to equip people with essential knowledge of market gardening.

We will be running another two courses this season so get in touch if you’d like to join our future programmes!

🗓️ The next course runs from the 30th of June until the 18th of August. Drop us a line or email Lucy at [email protected] to express your interest.

This project is possible thanks to Somerset Community Foundation.
