What an amazing initiative 🏍️ ❤️

Attention bikers! 🏍️🏍️

As bikers tend to ride in groups or pairs, it is usually the case that when one is involved in an incident, the first person on the scene will be a fellow biker.

Biker Down is a free awareness-raising course for bikers, created by Kent Fire and Rescue Service, and consists of 3 modules:

🔴Incident scene management
A presentation about on-scene management and personal safety for bikers discovering a crash involving a fellow biker.

🔴Casualty care
Instructors from the FireBike team with motorcycle first aid specific expertise cover trauma and mechanism of injury, including sn**ch rescues, basic life support, CPR, managing spinal injuries and crash helmet removal.

🔴The thinking biker
Instruction and advice from the FireBike team on being conspicuous. As well as discussing phenomena such as motion camouflage and looming, including tips on what you can do to be seen, without the need to cover yourself in luminous yellow.

For updates on courses, please check Facebook Biker Down Suffolk or X .

Very proud to see my fellow CFR Dave Hammond get the recognition he deserves on the EEAST page. Dave covers a lot of hours on our rota each week, in fact most weeks he probably covers the most amount of hours of all of us, and he always conducts himself with a calm and friendly professionalism. As with all of our members he's a huge asset to our community.

💓 Restart a Heart Day - 16 October 💓

We’re proud to keep sharing stories from our staff and volunteers as part of our Restart a Heart Day series. These moments show how CPR can empower ordinary people to do something extraordinary - save a life.

David Hammond, Community First Responder, shares his story:
“I have been a community first responder for over six years. In February 2024, I was working from home, when I was asked to respond to a patient having a seizure. The incident was at a neighbouring address, so I was on scene within a couple of minutes. I immediately recognised the patient was in cardiac arrest, so I began CPR, with the patient receiving two shocks from my defibrillator before the ambulance crew arrived. A pulse was detected, and the patient was transported to the local intensive care unit. After a spell in hospital, although gravely ill, the patient knocked on my door and had the most amazing smile on their face I had ever seen. This goes to show how quick, effective CPR can save lives.”

Let their experiences inspire you to learn CPR and be ready to make a difference ❤️

🚑 You might be thinking…. “how do I call a first responder?”

Well, the simple answer is you don't. You phone 999 and The Ambulance Service calls us IF it’s appropriate for us to attend.

Here are the details:

🩹 We compile a 24/7 rota each week with each CFR's availability.

🩹 The on-call CFR has a designated phone which is used for a direct line to ambulance control

🩹 Trying to contact a CFR directly will risk wasting potentially valuable minutes for both the CFR and patient.

🩹 We're trained on certain types of emergency (not all) so going through the 999 control room makes sure we are not sent to anything that requires a higher level of training or equipment.

🩹 control room triage calls coming in ensuring CFR’s are utilised correctly, allowing us to be available for life threatening emergencies when needed, and are not busy attending calls outside our remit.

🩹 As an Ambulance has (generally) further to travel the priority should always be to contact them first and get them dispatched and enroute. The control room will then contact the on-call CFR once a crew has been deployed.

🩹 We (normally) still arrive first as we're already in the area and we can then begin treatment before handing over to the more qualified medical professionals once they arrive on scene.

Any questions? Put them in the comments below. 🚑
