Friends of Mortimer Forest

Friends of Mortimer Forest Mortimer Forest provides a haven of peace and tranquillity. Wellbeing is a positive physical, social and mental state.

We are a charitable organization set up to help preserve and enhance the natural environment in Mortimer Forest and to encourage its use to promote mental and physical health and educational activities. This deeply rural area, on the borders of Herefordshire and Shropshire offers opportunities for a diverse range of physical activities and recreation. It is popular for walking, with waymarked trai

ls for those of all abilities, and vast swathes of forest in which to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life and immerse one’s self in the natural world. Increasingly, research on the impacts of the environment on health, suggests that contact with nature can be beneficial in terms of physical, social and mental health. Researchers have found that people living closer to green spaces are more physically active and healthier. The forest is abundant with wildlife and the charity is working with our members to help protect and enjoy the beautiful woodland and biodiversity within it. We are hosting events, walks talks and conservation activities. Visit our events page to see our upcoming event. If you wish to donate to the charity to support our ongoing work, please see our Just Giving Page where you can donate with Gift Aid: https://donate.justgiving.com/charity/friendsofmortimerforest/donation-amount

Another nature question for the group. We saw these caterpillars in this jasmin plant in a small web, looked very healthy and quite a lot of them. Any ideas on species let us know!

Is this another Ermine species or different?

The Speckled Wood is unique in its ability to spend the winter as either a chrysalis or a caterpillar 🐛💤

Hibernating caterpillars fix themselves to a grass stem with silk but may wake up to feed if the weather is mild enough.

Letting your grass grow long and leaving some dead plants is a great way to support this beautiful species throughout its life cycle. 🌿
