Hawkinge Community Fridge

We collect surplus food from local supermarkets and retailers that would otherwise go to landfill. We make this food available for anyone, free of charge.

What we have available varies from week to week, but its free and you can stop it being wasted! Hawkinge Community Fridge is run by a local Community Interest Company called Pub Church CIC Registered No:16232021

The aim of the community fridge is to prevent food waste. Food that would otherwise go to landfill, but is still fresh and is made available free of charge for anyone that would like it.

Hey! I'm Aileen and I volunteer almost every week at the community fridge!

I absolutely love helping out here and meeting so many new people (whilst also reducing a tonne of waste!) 🎉

A bit about me, I love to go for walks, cook for my family and go to the gym. I take pride in being a part of the community and this is the perfect way to give back!

The best parts of volunteering at the fridge are being able to work with my amazing team, whilst also getting to meet so many new people, so please make sure to come by and say hello!

I have lived in Hawkinge for 26 years and have a husband and three grown up daughters. Over recent years I have volunteered for Folkestone Rainbow Centres food bank where I experienced the satisfaction of giving food from supermarkets a good home. The Hawkinge Community Fridge is an excellent extension to this as it also saves perfectly good food being sent to landfill. Nick and I are members of Hawkinge Baptist Church, also based in the Community Centre. By volunteering for the Fridge, I believe, it is a way of ensuring that God’s good provision from the land is used in the most responsible of ways.

Hi, I’m Lillie! I live in Hawkinge and enjoy being part of the local community, getting involved in activities, meeting people, and giving my time to things that make a positive difference.

I volunteer at Hawkinge Community Fridge because it combines two things I care about: helping people and reducing waste. It’s great to see good food shared locally instead of going to landfill. I’m environmentally conscious, so helping give food a second chance while supporting the community feels really worthwhile.

I love the friendly atmosphere at the Community Fridge and being able to help wherever I’m needed. Since moving to Hawkinge, it’s been great to get more involved locally and be part of something that makes a real difference and positive impact.

Thanks to everyone who visited Hawkinge Community Fridge today between 10:30 and 12:30. We had 105 visitors and gave away 387kg of good food that would otherwise have gone to landfill! Come along and join us next week. Same time on Sunday.

Hi
I’m Sarah one of the volunteers at the Hawkinge community fridge. I have a passion for a ‘waste not want not’ kind of lifestyle, so being part of this local initiative has been a great opportunity to help redistribute huge amounts of food which would otherwise been thrown away by supermarkets to others, so we can benefit our own families and save a few pennies at the same time! Win win!!

Our lovely local community have been so supportive and generous with offering personal donations and sharing harvests from their own allotments too!

For me personally, the best part is Sunday mornings when the team have ‘set up’ and we are ready to meet you all and hearing your ideas of what you will be cooking and baking that week.

One of our volunteers has been out gleaning this week with Hythe Environmental Community Group and collected potatoes and cauliflowers to give away on Sunday.

A great team today served 107 people and stopped 329kg food going to landfill.

We have received 57kg of lovely cauliflowers and potatoes, picked straight from the fields, from the Gleaners this week and will be giving them away on Sunday.
To make it fair for everyone we do have to restrict some items to one per household. Obviously we rely on people's honesty when asked and if you are asked it is only because we want to make it as fair for everyone as possible .
We always have a rush first thing. However, we sometimes are able to replenish items, as some stock (such as flowers) doesn't arrive until later . So, if you want to avoid the queues, then please remember we are open until 12.30 .
Also, unfortunately we are unable to hold food or any items for anyone. It is on a first come , first served basis , but we try to spread out what is available by repen*shing stock every 30 minutes.
