Did you know the tarsier is the world's smallest primate — found nowhere else on Earth but the Philippines, most famously on the island of Bohol? At about the size of a palm, this rare and vulnerable species is also fiercely territorial.

Their paper-thin skulls, acute hearing and huge nocturnal eyes make them extraordinarily sensitive. Captivity, loud noises and camera flashes can push a tarsier into extreme stress — and in the worst cases, that stress turns fatal, as the animal repeatedly strikes its head against branches, cages or rocks. A sobering reminder of why quiet, respectful advocacy matters so much.

That's exactly what Tarsier Southeast Asian Spirit Gin stands for: a Filipino-owned gin producer helping fund tarsier conservation in the Philippines, one bottle at a time.

To mark this cause, I made a piece of handmade fabric art using only remnants and cutoffs from my own upcycled and repurposed clothing. I gave new life to an old McVitie's plush tarsier toy, reattaching its head so it could twist and tilt the way a real tarsier does, dressed it in a tiny denim vest to match my patched denim filipiniana, and had it "hold" a miniature bottle of Tarsier gin, tied on with invisible thread.

A small, slow, handmade way of saying: this matters.

Thank you, Sherwin Acebuche of Tarsier Southeast Asian Spirit Gin, for standing behind Folkestone & Hythe Filipino Community Network / Filipino community events year after year — this post is for you. 🙏

Find Tarsier Calamansi gin on Amazon, at wearetarsier.com, and at Gloucester M5 Services, or enjoy a glass at your favourite Filipino restaurant or any Ivy across the UK.

Please enjoy responsibly. 18+.

P.S. Thank you Tony Vaughan MP, for boldly wearing my creation. It is an upcycled AllSaints denim I overlaid with the Philippine traditional barong.

A historic 5th of July for the Filipino-British community 🇵🇭🇬🇧

A Message from Melissa Dizon:

Two years ago today, in the early hours of 5 July 2024, something extraordinary happened for our community here in Folkestone & Hythe District Council and Hythe: Tony Vaughan MP was declared our Member of Parliament — the first ever British MP of Filipino heritage. He was sworn in on 16 July 2024, and this anniversary still gives me goosebumps.

I remember that night like it was yesterday. My British partner Andy Cruttenden shook me awake: "Mel, Tony Vaughan won." Half-asleep, I thought he was murmuring some tongue-twister in a dream. I rolled over and went back to sleep. He tried again — same words, same excitement — and I just mumbled "what?", certain someone was disturbing my sleep for no reason. Then, slowly and loudly, he said it one more time: "Mel... Tony... Vaughan... WON!!!" That was the moment I shot out of bed. He'd won — and somehow, I felt like I'd won too.

Tony's story moves me every time I tell it: a mother from humble beginnings in the Philippines, a British father, and a son who became a Member of Parliament. It's a beautiful reminder that there is space for all of us to thrive here in the UK — for my little Summer, for every British-Filipino child, and for every child growing up between two cultures. If Tony can, so can they.

It's hard to believe two years have already gone by. Thank you also to Philippine Senator Sherwin Gatchalian for his warm message to our MP back then, he is now the SENATE PRESIDENT OF THE PHILIPPINES — on behalf of the Folkestone & Hythe Filipino Community Network, we continue to support you and all your work for our kababayans. Mabuhay po kayo!

And while we're celebrating, huge congratulations to Alex Eala, who made history at Wimbledon this week by defeating defending champion Iga Świątek — the Philippines' best-ever run at a Grand Slam. What a week to be proud of being Filipino!

I'm not a politician, and I never set out to be one. All I want is to help the British public get to know the Philippines a little better — our culture, our values, our people. So many people here already know Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam well, but the Philippines still deserves its moment in the spotlight.

That's exactly the spirit behind our company, KPO Architecture / KPO Outsourcing. We help UK construction and architecture firms grow sustainably by connecting them with talented, dedicated Filipino professionals who work seamlessly as part of their team — supporting everything from 2D CAD and 3D visualisation to a full-support construction package. It's a genuinely collaborative, win-win partnership, built on the same values of trust and connection this post is all about.

If you're a Managing Director looking to grow your business without the overheads, the overcapacity, or the headache of recruitment — or you simply want reliable support so you can focus on the bigger picture — I'd love to show you how. Message me, or comment "HOW?" below. 👇
