This is about to get weird.

Science Week, done properly.

Live experiments. Real equipment. Big reactions.

We’re doing something a bit special for Science Week this year

At Nova School, we run whole-school science experiences that get children asking questions, getting excited, and saying “how did that happen?”

This year’s sessions include:
- Big, dramatic chemical reactions
- Mind-bending vacuum experiments that bring invisible forces to life

Everything is delivered safely, in the school hall, and adapted for childrens learning needs.

If you work in a primary school, are part of a PTA, or know someone who helps organise Science Week, feel free to get in touch or give this a share.

Let’s make Science Week the week they remember and inspire the scientists and engineers of the future!

Day 10 of our 10 Days of STEM Heroes closes with a woman whose discovery has saved countless lives.

Stephanie Kwolek.

While working as a chemist, Stephanie discovered Kevlar, a fibre five times stronger than steel. It went on to be used in bulletproof vests, helmets, spacecraft, and even bridges. Her breakthrough was, an accident that came from her curiosity and persistence in the lab.

Her story proves that not every great invention is planned. Sometimes, game-changing discoveries happen when you’re simply following a question and daring to experiment.

Please share her story, talk about it with your families, and remind your kids that even small experiments can lead to something extraordinary.

Day 9 of our 10 Days of STEM Heroes brings us to a man whose name became a byword for quality.

Meet the real McCoy, Elijah McCoy!

Elijah invented a drip-feed lubrication system that kept steam engines running longer, smoother, and safer. His work transformed railways and industry at a time when the world was powered by steam.

This story was brand new to me, I had said the phrase "the real McCoy" but had no clue of its origin. Elijah's inventions were so effective that customers began asking for “the real McCoy”, meaning only his design would do. Excellence speaks for itself.

Please share his story, talk about it with your families, and remind your kids that practical skills and clever fixes can change industries, and make a name last for generations.

Day 8 of our 10 Days of STEM Heroes is one of the most famous inventors of them all, but his story is more about persistence than instant genius.

Thomas Edison didn’t just give us the lightbulb (others had the idea first), he improved it, made it practical, and built the first power stations so people could actually use it. He’s credited with over 1,000 patents, from sound recording to motion pictures.

Edison openly admitted to failing thousands of times before finding success. His attitude? “I didn’t fail, I just found 10,000 ways that didn’t work.” That resilience is what turned his ideas into world changing inventions.

Please share his story, talk about it with your families, and remind your kids that mistakes aren’t setbacks, they’re stepping stones to something brighter.

Day 7 of our 10 Days of STEM Heroes shines a light on an everyday invention that’s saved lives on the roads for over a century. Mary Anderson.

In 1903, Mary noticed drivers struggling to see in bad weather. Her solution? A simple, hand-operated windscreen wiper. At first, people laughed it off as unnecessary. But eventually, it became standard on every vehicle, and it’s kept us safe ever since.

Mary’s story shows that you don’t need a lab or a research grant to be an inventor. All it takes is noticing a problem and daring to solve it. Some of the simplest ideas turn out to be the most important.

Please share her story, talk about it at home, and remind your kids that paying attention to the world around them could spark the next big idea.

Day 6 of our 10 Days of STEM Heroes is someone who’s always been my personal favourite, and a big reason why I went into engineering myself. Leonardo da Vinci.

Centuries ahead of his time, Leonardo sketched designs for helicopters, submarines, tanks, and even diving suits, long before the technology existed to build them. He wasn’t just an artist, he was an engineer, scientist, and dreamer rolled into one.

As a kid, I was captivated by his notebooks. I used to sketch my own machines, just like him, and I was enthralled by how his imagination leapt from page to page. That sense of curiosity and creativity is what engineering, and STEM, is really about.

Leonardo never limited himself. Please share his story, talk about it with your families, and encourage your children to keep doodling, building, and asking “what if?”. You never know where it might lead.

Day 5 of our 10 Days of STEM Heroes is all about a woman whose work is woven into our everyday lives, even if you’ve never heard her name before.

Dr. Shirley Jackson. A brilliant physicist, her research in telecommunications paved the way for technologies like caller ID, fibre-optic cables, and the portable fax. Her work quietly shaped the way we communicate, share information, and stay connected.

It’s a reminder that some of the biggest contributions aren’t flashy, but without them, the world just wouldn’t run the same. She also broke barriers for women and people of colour in STEM, making it easier for the next generation to follow in her footsteps.

Please share her story, talk about it with your families, and let’s keep inspiring our young people to see their ideas as valuable, even if the world doesn’t notice them at first.

Day 4 of our 10 Days of STEM Heroes jumps us forward to the late 1980s, when one man connected the world in a way no one had before.

Meet Tim Berners-Lee.

Tim invented the World Wide Web, not the internet itself, but the system that lets us browse, link, and share information easily. Without it, there’d be no websites, no online shopping and no social media!

I love Tim’s story because he didn’t create the web to make money, he gave it away so anyone could use it. He made it possible for billions of people to learn, communicate, and create without barriers.

Please share his story, talk about it with your family, and imagine – what could your child invent that connects people in new ways?

Day 3 of our 10 Days of STEM Heroes takes us right back to the 1800s, to someone who saw the future before it even existed.

Meet Ada Lovelace.

While working with Charles Babbage on his “Analytical Engine” a sort of mechanical calculator, Ada wrote what is now recognised as the first ever computer algorithm. Whats strange? The machine she was writing for hadn’t even been built yet. She imagined its potential decades before computers became real.

Please share her story, talk about it at home, and remind your kids that sometimes, seeing possibilities no one else does is the first step to changing the world.

Meet Alan Turing,

I love his story because it shows how powerful “thinking differently” can be. Turing didn’t just solve problems, he saw patterns and possibilities others missed.

Please share his story, talk about it with your families, and let’s keep inspiring the next generation of problem-solvers.

We’re kicking off with someone you might know as a glamorous Hollywood actress… but who also quietly shaped the modern world.
Her name? Hedy Lamarr.

In between starring in films, she co-invented a clever “frequency-hopping” system during WWII to stop radio signals being jammed. At the time, it was overlooked. Today, that very idea powers Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS – the tech we use every single day.

I love her story because it smashes the idea that inventors have to look or act a certain way. She wasn’t in a lab, she was on a film set, but she still changed the world.
