Another brilliant day for our 2026 scholar, Matt Whorwood, who is reaching for the sky at Sherburn Aero Club.

Matt — proudly sponsored by British Airways High Flight, one of FSDP’s longest‑standing sponsors — has not only spent time flying but also reflecting on the journey ahead. British Airways High Flight's continued belief in our scholars is what makes moments like this possible, and we are deeply grateful for their commitment to changing lives through aviation.

Joining Matt was Alek Kroll, ex‑scholar and now a dedicated FSDP Ambassador. Our Ambassadors play a vital role in the FSDP family: they champion our mission, share their lived experience, and offer guidance and encouragement to current and past scholars. Alex is living proof of what paying it forward looks like.

Seeing Matt and Alex together — one at the start of his flying journey, one continuing to lift others up — is a reminder of the powerful cycle of support that keeps FSDP thriving.

Thank you to British Airways High Flight for investing in potential, and to our Ambassadors for helping support the FSDP family to unlock the potential of flight for disabled adults.

There’s something powerful about sharing your story. 💙✈️

In this clip from his interview with Pamela Ballantine on UTV Life, FSDP former scholar and Head Mentor Matthew Monaghan talks about the inspiration behind his new book, The Weight of Progress.

Matthew’s journey—from overcoming challenges to becoming a pilot, mentor, and advocate—is a reminder that progress isn’t measured by giant leaps, but by the small steps we take every day and the people who believe in us along the way.

His story continues to inspire aspiring pilots and future Flying Scholarships for Disabled People scholars across Northern Ireland and beyond, proving that with determination, opportunity, and support, incredible things are possible.

Watch the clip and hear why Matthew felt compelled to share his story. 💫

Happy Birthday to our 2021 FSDP Scholar, Albert Thomson!

From everyone at Flying Scholarships for Disabled People, we’re wishing you the happiest of birthdays today, Albert. Your determination, spirit, and the way you embraced your scholarship year continue to inspire us all.

Once someone joins FSDP, they don’t just complete a programme — they become part of a family that stays connected long after the flying stops. And today, your FSDP family is celebrating you. Have a brilliant day and an even brighter year ahead.

Today at Sherburn Aero Club, we witnessed exactly what togetherness in action looks like.

Scholars Gavin and Matt have recently taken to the skies with flying instructor Glenn and took time today out to share their experiences with two very special guests — Mark Sugden and Peter Szertes from the Mark Long Trust - whilst supported by FSDP Ambassador Alek Kroll.

The Mark Long Trust has generously sponsored Gavin’s scholarship, and seeing them on the airfield today made the connection even more meaningful. Their ethos mirrors ours: creating opportunities for disabled people to experience the freedom of flight, build confidence, and open doors to new possibilities.

Moments like this remind us that when organisations share a belief in potential, lives change. And today, at Sherburn, you could feel that change happening in real time.

Thank you to the Mark Long Trust for helping Gavin take this incredible step — and for standing alongside us in championing ability through aviation.

This Volunteers' Week, we want to say a heartfelt thank you to all the incredible volunteers who give their time, energy and enthusiasm to support FSDP and our wider RAF family.

This photo shows some of the amazing volunteers from The Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) last year — an event that brings together thousands of people who share a passion for aviation, community and inspiring future generations.

While we are saddened that our sister charity, the Royal Air Force Charitable Trust (RAFCT), has had to make the difficult decision to cancel RIAT 2026, we want to send our sincere thanks and best wishes to every volunteer who has contributed to make all the previous years such a success. Your dedication, commitment and spirit are truly valued.

To all our FSDP volunteers, RIAT volunteers, and the many others who give their time to support charitable causes: thank you. We look forward to coming together again in 2027 and creating more unforgettable memories together.
