Refugee Week 🧡

We kicked off this week by visiting a local school and speaking at two assemblies to raise awareness among young people about refugee experiences. There were lots of interesting questions!

📣Refugee Week is here!

This week, at Epsom & Ewell Refugee Network, we celebrate the courage, creativity, and resilience of refugees and people seeking asylum in our community.

Refugee Week 2026 runs from 15–21 June, alongside World Refugee Day on 20 June, and this year’s theme is Courage 🧡

Join us in recognising the strength it takes to start again and build new lives.

✨ We’d love to hear your stories of kindness in Epsom & Ewell! ✨

Have you seen or experienced a simple act of kindness, gratitude, or community spirit recently? Maybe a neighbour helping out, someone going the extra mile, or a moment that simply made you smile đź’›

Please take a moment to share it with us on our board of kindness at Epsom Library.

We’re joining the A Million Acts of Hope campaign — a national movement celebrating the power of everyday kindness and the positive impact communities can have when people come together.

Let’s shine a light on the good happening around us 🌟

We had the wonderful opportunity to attend Helen Maguire’s “Connecting the Constituency” event at the House of Commons last evening ✨

The event brought together local businesses, schools, charities, and faith organisations with one shared goal: to connect, support one another, and strengthen our community 🤝🧡

It was such a positive and inspiring evening filled with meaningful conversations and new connections 🌱

A true reminder that hope grows when communities come together 💫🧡

Women’s Group took part in A Million Acts of Hope 🧡

Together, they shared words, thoughts, and small moments that give them hope, from family and friendship to health, learning English, and feeling part of a community. Most of what they shared showed how much family, love, and connection give them strength in their everyday lives.

For many of the women, this group is more than a class, it is a safe space to connect with others, build confidence, and feel part of a community where they are seen, heard, and supported.

Today reminded us that we are all human, with different stories and origins, but we all belong to the same world. Community is what matters, and it is here that hope grows.🧡

A powerful act of hope through language, culture, and community 🧡

Halyna arrived in the UK as a refugee in March 2022 after fleeing the war in Ukraine. Leaving behind her home, work, and the life she had built was incredibly difficult. In her own words, she felt that “everything was in the past and you have to start almost from scratch.”

Back in Ukraine, Halyna worked as a Ukrainian language teacher. Soon after arriving in the UK, she felt a strong need to reconnect with her community and support other Ukrainian families going through the same experience. She realised that even in a new country, she still had something valuable to give.

That is when Halyna came to us with the idea of running Ukrainian lessons for children. Since then, she has been volunteering every Saturday, carefully preparing lessons and teaching children not only the Ukrainian language, but also its culture and traditions. For many families, this connection to their roots is deeply important, helping children stay connected to who they are and preserve their identity.

Through her dedication, Halyna has created a space of belonging, connection, and pride for these children and families. Her story is a powerful reminder that even after loss and displacement, people continue to rebuild, support one another, and keep hope alive through community and culture 🧡

✨At Buddy Club, we asked the children and their families a simple question:

“What gives you hope?”

Their answers were simple, honest, and beautiful, being with friends, going to school, playing, learning, and spending time together.

Buddy Club brings together children from refugee families and students from Freeman’s School to do homework, play games, and spend time together. But it is more than that, it is a space where friendships grow, confidence builds, and children feel welcomed, included, and part of a community.

Sometimes hope is found in the simplest things, a friend, a game, a classroom, or having people around you who make you feel that you belong 🧡
