Enfield Talking Newspaper

Enfield Talking Newspaper A free weekly audio recording of Local Enfield news, produced for the blind and partially sighted. Did you see that story in the local newspaper?

The notice about the school fete? The sign on the lamppost? For some of our neighbours, the answer is no. That's why the Enfield Talking Newspaper exists. For fifty years we have been providing blind and visually impaired people in Enfield with a free weekly tape covering the kind of local information that is hard to access - even in our internet age. The sort of information that helps people stay connected to their community.

This is an article from The Enfield Gazette & Observer, dated 19th May 1961, reporting on the local Branch of Toc H and one our first ever recordings. Sixty-five years later we are still going! The Enfield Talking Newspaper is, we think, the longest running talking newspaper in the UK. We will be celebrating our 65th Anniversary later this year (watch this space for details). If anyone knows any of the people mentioned in this article, and has some interesting stories of those early days, we would love to hear from you!

Always a joy when our listeners take the time to send us such lovely feedback!

*** Could this be you?***

Each week, behind the microphones of ETN , the local news is recorded, edited, downloaded and distributed, but folks this can only happen because of our incredible technical team who are now looking for volunteers to join them!

All training will be given , and I’m assured you really don’t have to be a “pro” to enquire, but some technical knowledge beyond the “historical photo” would obviously be an advantage!

So if you have a few hours to give, once a month to join our technical recorders, please leave us a message below and one of the team will be in touch!

Well it’s been a while since we’ve posted, but that doesn’t mean our offline world has been quiet…oh no no!

Tonight is our ETN AGM , where our readers and committee members get to put our combined energies towards our charities’ future plans.

Folks, if you haven’t been aware, next year is going to be our 65th anniversary. What a milestone! You can be assured you will be hearing more about our celebratory year as the longest running Talking Newspaper, and we’ll be looking back in time to bring you lots of ETN memories to enjoy and perhaps discover for the first time!

So do you have a personal memory or story you would like to share?

Perhaps you have a family member who has been a long time listener , or you may well be a new ETN recipient who has found that this link to the local news has become your weekly fix, but however or wherever you enjoy your Talking Newspaoer update, do get in touch to share your thoughts.
