Garden birds like Robins spend time following their parents around after fledging the nest to learn how to find food for themselves. When in a Rescue, rehabilitators do their best to try and teach the birds how to find their own food before they are released to give them the best chance of survival. Once our baby Robins were eating for themselves and sustaining weight in their inside avairy they were then moved outside to acclimatise before being released. To help them learn how to find food outside we try to replicate the type of food sources they will find outside. In their current avairy they have a bird feeder which is the same as they will have in their release area, a ground feeder and today we have made up a soil tray with mealworms in it to try and get them searching around a bit more for their food like they would in a garden or woodland 😊

I just wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone. We are already nearly halfway towards our fundraising target which is amazing, especially as I've not been so good with all the social media stuff lately. You are amazing and i can't say thank you enough for your continued support helping us rehabilitate all these fabulous birds 😊

Although most of us have been enjoying this hot weather, unfortunately our wildlife have been finding it hard. All over the country there have been chicks jumping out of nests because they are overheating. Here we had a nest of four swallow chicks that were found on the floor of a stable. Their nest was high up under an asbestos roof. This type of roof gets so hot it would have been like an oven for them. These poor babies were in such a bad way. We had to put one to sleep on arrival due to its injuries from the fall, the other three were in a critical condition, despite our best efforts and round the clock care two more died over the next few days. Luckily one has made it through and is now flourishing and eating well. I've seen lots of people advising on the Internet when they find Swallows on the floor they should try to put them back into or near to the nest. I would advise that if you find chicks on the floor that have fallen from height they will need checking over by a reputable wildlife rehabilitator, so if you find yourself in this position then please contact your nearest wildlife rescue for advice before attempting to try and put them back in the nest. Luckily for this little one the finder did exactly the right thing and got help 😊

Our baby Robins are now eating for themselves and have been upgraded to the final stage of their rehabilitation journey in an outside avairy. Here they will get acclimatised to the outside world and be support fed until it's time for their release 😊

We managed to get another swift away once it had cooled down a bit. We even managed to watch it fly away in the direction it came from. They are so clever 😊

So here it is for all of you that have been asking, I've finally found the time to set up my Just Giving page for this year. We have already had more Swifts in than we had this time last year and with the costs of everything going up your support is needed more than ever. If you can give a little than that would be amazing, if you are unable to donate right now then you can still help by sharing my page far and wide.
Thank you everyone for your continuing support, we really couldn't do this without you x

Just an update on the baby Robins. They have started to 'fledge' the nest and so have been upgraded to a large mesh avairy where they are learning to find food and feed themselves. They are doing really well and when they are feeding themselves and keeping their weight up they will be moved to an outside avairy for the final stage of their rehabilitation journey.

Unfortunately these Robins have ended up in care when they really shouldn't have. The finder saw a cat kill a blackbird and thinking this was her nest took it out of the hedge and to the vets. Apparently the finder didn't see them being fed for two days. These Robins chicks were in great condition and were definitely being fed. If you do see young birds that are uninjured please always try to get advice from a reputable wildlife rescue before picking them up. It's such a shame that these little guys have come to me, but they are doing great and will all be released when they are able to feed for themselves and have had some time in an outside avairy.

Woohoo, Swift release!! Amazing watching them fly off so strong after surviving injury, anaesthetic, x-rays and medication. Nursing them back to health can be hard work but when you get a successful release it's all worth it 😊
