A UKCA or CE mark is important. It shows that the manufacturer states the machine meets the relevant health and safety requirements when it is placed on the market.

But the mark is not a guarantee that the gate will remain safe throughout its lifetime.

A gate can become unsafe if it is:

🔧 Installed incorrectly

🔄 Altered or modified

🔩 Poorly maintained

⏳ Affected by wear, damage or ageing components

The UKCA/CE mark relates to the machine when it is placed on the market. It cannot account for what happens to the gate afterwards.

A UKCA/CE mark is important - but it doesn't replace installation by a competent and trained installer, regular maintenance and ongoing safety checks.

It’s all in the detail

At first glance, this looks like a sensible way of securing a gate hinge. The nut that the eye screw fixes into has been welded into the gate post, providing a solid fixing point.

But there’s another detail to consider…

⚠️ What happens when the gate opens onto the post?

Without a suitable stop post, the gate can continue to open until it puts a significant load onto the hinge and fixing.

If the welded nut or its weld isn’t strong enough, that additional load could cause the weld to fail – potentially leaving the gate unsupported.

🔧 A strong fixing is only as good as the forces it is designed to withstand.

This is why Gate Safety by Design matters. Think about how the gate will move, where it will stop and what loads will be placed on its components.

👉 Don’t just look at how something is fixed – think about what could happen to that fixing in use.
