🌿 Some discoveries are even more wonderful when they're shared.

A child spots a tiny mushroom beneath a tree.

Someone notices a bird they've never seen before.

A grandparent remembers the name of a plant.

A neighbour shares something they've learned from years of gardening.

And suddenly, an ordinary moment becomes an opportunity to learn together. 💛

That's one of the things we love about nature.

There's always something new to discover, no matter how old we are or how much we already know.

And nobody needs to be the expert.

We can ask questions together.

Explore together.

Share what we've noticed.

And sometimes discover that the person teaching us something is the youngest one in the group. 🌱

At Soul Nest Sanctuary, we believe learning should be something that brings people together.

Not something measured only by what we can remember, but something enriched by curiosity, experience and connection.

🌳 Our little October tree investigation is a perfect example.

Perhaps you've noticed your tree beginning to change colour.

Maybe you've discovered something growing around its roots.

Or spotted a bird resting in its branches.

Whatever you've found, we'd love to hear about it.

Because when we share our discoveries, we give somebody else a new reason to look a little closer too. 🔎🍂

🌿 SANCTUARY NATURE NOTE 🍂

One of autumn's most beautiful changes is happening around us.

Green leaves are becoming yellow, gold, orange and red.

But have you ever stopped to wonder...

why? 🌳

During spring and summer, many leaves contain lots of chlorophyll—the pigment that gives them their green colour and plays an important role in photosynthesis.

As autumn brings shorter days and cooler conditions, deciduous trees begin preparing for winter.

Chlorophyll production slows and the green begins to disappear.

And something wonderful happens.

🍂 Pigments that were already present in the leaf become easier for us to see, revealing yellows and oranges.

🍁 In some trees, other pigments can also produce brilliant reds and purples.

So those autumn colours aren't simply the leaves being painted by the new season.

We're watching changes in the chemistry of the leaf itself. 🌿

And if you're taking part in our Choose a Tree Nature Investigation, this week is the perfect time to take another look at your tree.

🔎 Are all its leaves still green?

🍂 Which colours are appearing first?

🌳 Are some parts changing faster than others?

📷 Could you take a photograph now and compare it again in a week or two?

You don't need to know the name of every tree or understand every process to begin exploring.

Start with what you can see.

Ask a question.

Look a little closer.

Then see where your curiosity takes you. 💛

🌿 “Why?”

It might be one of the most powerful questions a child can ask.

Why do leaves change colour?

Why is that mushroom growing there?

Where do birds go in winter?

Why does moss grow on that tree?

What's underneath this stone?

And sometimes, as adults, our instinct is to immediately provide the answer.

But what if we occasionally answered with another question?

“What do you think?” 🔎

Then looked together.

Wondered together.

Investigated together.

Maybe found the answer.

Maybe discovered three more questions instead. 🌱

At Soul Nest Sanctuary, we're becoming increasingly interested in the kind of learning that begins with curiosity rather than instruction.

Because children don't need to memorise everything about the natural world before they can form a relationship with it.

They need opportunities to explore it.

To touch fallen leaves.

Watch insects.

Follow tracks.

Notice patterns.

Ask strange and wonderful questions.

And discover that their curiosity is worth following. 💛

Knowledge matters.

But so does knowing how to wonder, investigate and keep asking.

So the next time a little voice asks:

“Why does it do that?”

perhaps we don't always need to have the answer.

🌿 SOUL NEST NATURE INVESTIGATION 🌳

This October, we'd like to invite you to get to know one tree.

It doesn't need to be somewhere wild or spectacular.

It might be the tree outside your window.

One in your garden.

A favourite in the local park.

Or one you regularly pass on your walks. 🍂

Choose your tree—and then visit it throughout the season.

Each time, notice something.

🔎 What colour are its leaves?

🍂 How quickly are they falling?

🌰 Can you find seeds, nuts or fruit?

🐦 Which birds or insects visit it?

🌿 What is growing on or around its bark?

🌧️ How does it look after rain?

And if children are joining in, let their questions lead the investigation.

Take photographs.

Draw what you see.

Collect fallen leaves where appropriate.

Write down your observations.

Or simply stand underneath it for a few minutes and look.

There is no test at the end.

No right way to do it.

The aim is simply to return often enough that somewhere familiar begins revealing things you hadn't noticed before. 💛

Because there's a difference between seeing a tree—

and getting to know one.

🌿 SANCTUARY NATURE NOTE 🍄

Autumn has arrived—and with it, you may be noticing fungi appearing in woodlands, gardens and grassy spaces.

But the mushroom we see above ground is often only a small part of the story.

Many fungi exist largely out of sight as networks of tiny thread-like structures called mycelium, growing through soil, wood and other material. 🌱

And fungi have some extraordinary jobs within an ecosystem.

🍂 Many help break down dead leaves, wood and other organic matter.

🌱 In doing so, nutrients can be recycled back through the ecosystem.

🌳 Some fungi form close relationships with plants and trees, exchanging nutrients through connections around their roots.

🐛 And fungi themselves become part of the wider food web.

Without decomposers, the natural world couldn't recycle materials in the way it does.

So that mushroom growing from an old log isn't simply an autumn decoration.

It may be a tiny visible clue to an enormous amount of work happening underneath and around it. 🍄

This week's little nature investigation:

Next time you're outdoors, see how many different fungi you can spot.

Look at their shapes.

Their sizes.

Their colours.

And especially where they're growing.

On soil?

Dead wood?

Among fallen leaves?

At the base of a tree?

You don't need to know their names to begin learning from them.

Sometimes curiosity starts simply by asking:

“Why is it growing there?” 🔎🌿

Please admire wild fungi without eating them unless they have been confidently identified as edible by someone with appropriate expertise.

🌿 A Sanctuary can begin before it has a home.

It begins when we choose to care for the places already around us.

When we learn about the wildlife living alongside us.

When we leave a little corner wild.

When we share something we know.

When we listen to what someone else can teach us.

When children are encouraged to stay curious.

When different generations learn together.

When somebody feels that their contribution matters. 💛

Over these past few weeks, we've been sharing more of what Soul Nest Sanctuary hopes to stand for—

🌿 care for our environment

📚 accessible, curiosity-led learning

🐾 compassion for animals and wildlife

🤝 participation and shared skills

💛 community and belonging

And while the longer-term vision continues to take shape behind the scenes, none of these things need to wait for the perfect piece of land.

We can begin where we are.

With the places we already know.

The people already around us.

And the small choices available to us today. 🌱

Perhaps that's one of the most important foundations we're laying:

Soul Nest Sanctuary isn't only somewhere we're hoping to create.

It's something we're learning how to practise.

And step by rooted step, that practice is becoming something real. 🌿💛

🌿 Some of the most important things we pass on aren't things at all.

They're the names of the birds we recognise.

The recipe somebody taught us years ago.

How to grow something from seed.

How to mend instead of replace.

Where the best berries grow.

How to care for an animal gently.

The stories of a place and the people who lived there before us.

And sometimes, they're lessons travelling in the other direction. 💛

A child reminds an adult to stop and look at the caterpillar.

To ask why.

To be fascinated by something tiny.

To see an ordinary woodland as somewhere full of possibility.

Every generation carries something the others can learn from.

At Soul Nest Sanctuary, we hope to nurture spaces where that knowledge can travel—

between children and adults,

neighbours and families,

people with years of experience and people discovering something for the very first time. 🌱

Because community knowledge shouldn't disappear when one generation grows older.

It should be shared.

Practised.

Adapted.

And passed on.

When generations learn together, we don't only preserve knowledge.

We create new knowledge together too. 🌿📚

🍂 Today, we welcome the autumn equinox.

A quiet turning point in the natural year.

The equinox marks the moment when the Sun crosses the celestial equator, bringing us close to an equal balance of daylight and darkness.

From here in the Northern Hemisphere, the nights continue to lengthen as we move further into autumn. 🌿

And the living world responds.

🍂 Leaves change as trees prepare for the colder months.

🐦 Some birds begin or continue remarkable seasonal journeys.

🌰 Seeds, nuts and berries become important sources of food.

🦔 Wildlife searches for food and suitable shelter.

🍄 Fungi appear through woodland floors, helping nutrients cycle through ecosystems.

Autumn isn't simply something beautiful to look at.

It's an enormous seasonal transition happening all around us.

And one of the simplest ways we can begin understanding the natural world is to notice how it changes through the year.

Visit the same tree.

Walk the same path.

Watch the same patch of garden.

Notice what arrives.

Notice what disappears.

Notice what changes.

Over time, an ordinary place becomes somewhere you truly know. 💛

At Soul Nest Sanctuary, that's the kind of relationship with nature we hope to encourage—

not simply visiting the natural world,

but learning to recognise ourselves as part of it. 🌍🌱

🍂 Autumn isn't nature giving up.

It's nature changing its work.

Around us, the signs are beginning to appear.

Leaves are changing.

Seeds are travelling.

Fruits and berries are ripening.

Wildlife is responding to shorter days.

Plants are beginning to draw their energy inward.

And beneath our feet, an entire world continues working quietly. 🌿

Fallen leaves begin to break down.

Nutrients return to the soil.

Fungi and tiny organisms help recycle what has finished growing.

Seeds wait for the conditions they need.

Animals feed, shelter and prepare for the months ahead.

What can look like an ending is actually part of a much bigger cycle.

Growth doesn't always look like growth. 🌱

Sometimes it looks like releasing.

Resting.

Returning.

Preparing.

As autumn settles around us, perhaps we can resist seeing the fading of summer as nature becoming empty.

Look a little closer.

The landscape is still incredibly busy—

it's simply doing different work now. 🍂💛

At Soul Nest Sanctuary, learning to recognise these natural cycles is part of learning how to care for the living world around us.

🌿 Community doesn't mean everybody doing the same thing.

It means recognising that different people bring different things.

One person might know how to grow food.

Another can fix something that's broken.

Someone loves organising.

Someone else makes people feel heard.

One person knows the names of the birds.

Another has stories gathered across a lifetime.

And somewhere nearby, there's probably a child asking the question none of the adults thought to ask. 💛

None of these contributions need to look the same to matter.

At Soul Nest Sanctuary, we're interested in the kind of community where knowledge isn't only held by the person at the front of the room.

It's shared.

Between neighbours.

Between generations.

Between people with different experiences, skills and ways of seeing the world. 🌱

Because when we stop asking,

“What can this person do for us?”

and begin asking,

“What might we learn from one another?”

something changes.

People become participants rather than spectators.

Knowledge travels.

Confidence grows.

Skills are passed on.

And community becomes something we build together. 🤝🌿

That's the kind of learning culture we hope to nurture as Soul Nest continues to take root.
