We have just finished work on the student calm garden at Dumfries and Galloway College in Dumfries, supported by Inc. The garden revitalises an under-used garden space at the College and provides a large space for growing food which will be used in the canteen. It also features two hazel trees as a memorial feature, with the garden layout being designed by a former student. We're looking forward to seeing the raised beds in cultivation this year and lots of pollinator-friendly planting. A huge thanks to the students that helped with the garden build and especially to our delivery partner, Honor, who drove this project for the College!

Back in 2025 we worked with Letham Mains Primary School in Haddington to rejuvenate some raised beds with pollinator friendly plants and crops. We also dug a pond in one of the raised beds for extra interest for the school. We are looking forward to seeing how it all looks this year! 🌱 ☀️

Following on from last week's post on the low fertility flowerbeds at the Chattowood housing estate in Essex, this garden, created by John Little, shows how building waste (crushed concrete, ceramics, bricks, glass) can be used to establish low maintenance tracts of diverse native flora, benefitting a huge array of foraging and nesting pollinators. The results are inspiring!

Fantastic work at the Chattowood development in Essex that featured in a November episode of Gardener's World. The team at Beth Chatto's Plants and Gardens have shown that cut and paste lawns and shrubberies are not a necessary part of new housing estates, and have created something truly beautiful and, critically, low maintenance!

created a Bee Bed with us last year. They have done a fantastic job maintaining it, as they do their many other plantings across Forres! Here we have the Bee Bed in May, June, and late October. We love to see some bare earth in a planting, this is great for our ground nesting bees

A Greener Christmas Gift: Choose Pollinator-Friendly Hellebores 🌸. This Christmas, many of us will reach for traditional festive plants like poinsettia or amaryllis as last minute gifts. While beautiful, these plants are often short-lived indoors and offer little benefit beyond the holiday season. This year, why not give a gift that lasts longer—and gives back to nature? Hellebores are a perfect alternative. Often called the “Christmas rose,” 🎄 hellebores and nectar for bees and other pollinators when food is scarce. By choosing pollinator-friendly hellebores, you’re helping support wildlife at a critical time of year. Unlike many festive houseplants, hellebores can be planted outdoors after the holidays, where they’ll return year after year with elegant, long-lasting flowers. They’re hardy, low-maintenance, and thrive in winter gardens—making them a gift that keeps on giving long after the decorations come down. This Christmas, consider swapping poinsettia or amaryllis for a hellebore. It’s a thoughtful, sustainable present that brings winter beauty, supports pollinators, and reminds us that even small choices can make a big difference.

🌼 Shout out to dandelions!
They’re more than just a wildflower - they’re a key contributor to our environment and an essential food source for early pollinators. 🐝💛
