On Saturday 12th July, we’re hosting a filming day to celebrate and spotlight the voices of Black and Ethnic Minority (BME) carers, and we would be honoured to have you with us.

Too often, the contributions, challenges, and stories of BME carers go unseen. To combat this, we're creating a vibrant, heartfelt short film that will centre your voice, your experience, and your strength as a carer.

We’ll provide food, refreshments, and a safe, welcoming space for you to express yourself. No experience in front of a camera is needed, just come as you are.

Date: Saturday 12th July
Location: St David's Carrick Knowe Church
Time: 10:00am to 4:00pm

To take part, please fill in this quick Google form https://forms.gle/urZQdxLd9EvoFoaX8
For more information, please reach out or email [email protected]

Let’s show Scotland the beauty, resilience, and heart of BME carers.

We aim to capture the stories of black carers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Why is this important?

We want to provide a platform for black people to share their experiences.

Very few platforms are available for Scotland’s black community’s stories to be told. As a result of this, very few cultural productions are created by them and with them in mind.

Scotland - Who Cares? will break the silence that has pervaded Scottish society for generations and provide a critical platform for black carers to raise their voice and be heard by wider Scottish society about their crucial contribution during one of the most life-altering periods in modern history.

This project will help change society’s perceptions of the Scottish black community, bridging the gap of understanding by sharing positive stories of black people in Scotland.

Scotland - Who Cares is about capturing the stories of black carers during the pandemic. But how can the public access these stories?

We will produce a documentary that captures all of the care workers’ stories into a single narrative and national archive. The Scotland - Who Cares documentary and booklet will be made available on our website and national libraries as a permanent record of the contribution of black carers to Scotland's fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

We want to ensure that audiences worldwide and future generations are able to access this important piece of Scottish history.

If you want to get involved or are eager to learn more, please send us a message or visit our website.

The goal of Scotland - Who Cares is to capture the stories of black care workers and document their contribution to Scotland's fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sounds great, but how exactly are we going to do this?

We're going to:

1. Recruit black carers to contribute to the project.

2. Deliver media training to care participants.

3. Film and record each individual story.

4. Distribute the documentary film and booklet.

5. Encourage people to explore their own heritage.

Black people's social, economic and historic contributions often go unrecognised. This project will ensure that we can capture black people's selfless and direct contribution to a critical period of Scottish history.

If this sounds like something you want to get involved in, send us a message or visit our website to find out more.

Before we tell you more about our project, the team at Scotland - Who Cares would like to give a huge thank you to the The National Lottery Heritage Fund who are graciously funding our project. We wouldn’t be able to carry out this important project without their generosity, so we’re extremely grateful for their support. Thank you to both the National Lottery Heritage Fund and National Lottery Players for making this possible.

‘Scotland - Who Cares?’ is a project that seeks to record the unheralded contribution of black care workers to Scotland’s fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Why is this important?

Given that a huge proportion of members of the Scottish black community are involved in the care sector, black care workers were key to providing front-line services to the elderly, sick and infirm across the country at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Unfortunately, this means that a disproportionate number of black people suffered from the short-term, long-term and often fatal effects of the disease.

Black people are the unsung heroes of the pandemic and yet their story remains unknown and largely unrecognised by mainstream Scottish & UK people at large.

It is our goal to record these stories and make them known nationally and internationally. Stay tuned to find out how we plan to do this. Alternatively, you can visit our website for more information and job opportunities.
