Growing Spaces Project

Growing Spaces Project Growing Spaces is a school campus development project to provide the best learning and working environment for our pupils and staff, and ensure our future.

“Reusing existing buildings is a very important part of what we can do for sustainability; more than implementing energy efficient measures; for it is using energy already expended.” Architect Benjamin Tindall at Doors Open (2019)

Phase One: Once a hayloft in the 18th Century, the East Coach House (now Steiner Waldorf classrooms) is part of a C-listed coach house. The child-friendly architecture

won an international architectural accolade owing to the pupil participation in the community build as part of their education. "The survival of the stable block contributes to a large extent to the listed building status." Historic Environment Scotland

Phase Two: Create open plan Seedlings Playgroup room on ground floor of 19th Century Craigneen Villa. Over £100,000 has been raised through donations from parents, a former Edinburgh Steiner teacher, Charles Kovaks, and a community loan. The project is at Planning Permission & Building Consent stage. Edinburgh Steiner School is the first school to commit to continuing to offer families with young children the opportunity of a Steiner Waldorf preschool education through the Early Years & Childcare scheme when provision almost doubles from 600 to 1,140 hours in August 2021.
