🚲 Developing Active Travel with Cycling Scotland
At New College Lanarkshire, a commitment to sustainability and active travel took a major step forward when they recently welcomed Abraham Lindohf (Boo) into the role of Campus Cycle Officer—and the impact was both immediate and long‑lasting.
During his internship, Boo played a central role in promoting cycling and active travel to students and staff. His work combined engagement, hands‑on support, and strategic project development:
✅ Delivered cycle training and coordinated active travel events.
These included Dr Bike sessions, bike giveaways, and awareness‑raising activities that encouraged students from all backgrounds to travel more sustainably.
✅ Created the foundations of a new Bike Library
This key project enabled access to 10 bikes—particularly supporting low‑income and vulnerable young people who wouldn’t normally have access.
✅ Secured and managed funding applications
Boo supported bids for additional storage, Play on Pedals resources, and future cycling infrastructure—unlocking over £10,000 in potential future funding and strengthening long‑term active travel ambitions.
✅ Built tools and resources for sustainability on campus
Including a toolbox and information hub that will remain in place long after the internship ends.
❓ What Worked Well
Boo demonstrated exceptional professionalism and enthusiasm, with strong communication skills that helped engage a wide range of groups across the college community. Events were well‑coordinated, cross‑department support was strong, and his sustainability knowledge brought valuable insight to every conversation.
📒 Challenges and Learning
One ongoing obstacle was the absence of a handover from previous CCO's, (which will be coordinated from now on). This meant that many initiatives had to be built from scratch—front‑loading a significant amount of work early in the internship.
Despite this, Boo’s ability to adapt and create structure has set the college up for continued success in active travel development.
💥 The Impact
The combined projects initiated during the internship have the potential to impact up to 12,000 students at New College Lanarkshire—demonstrating how a single internship can amplify sustainability at scale.
👨 Host Perspective
“Hosting Boo was a highly positive and productive experience. His knowledge, professionalism, and enthusiasm made a significant contribution not only to his own development, but also to the college’s commitment to health, wellbeing, and sustainable practices.”
— John O'Hara, Supervisor
We are delighted that Boo aced his internship, and can't wait to see what he achieves in the future 😀
