🌱 Lib Dem Councillors Champion Expansion of "Sustainable Villages" Initiative 🌱

East Riding Liberal Democrats, including South Hunsley Cllr Margaret Corless and campaigner Mie Mie Kyaing, are backing plans to roll out successful community-led green initiatives to more local villages! 🌍✨

Following the incredible success of Sustainable Ferriby CIC, which has been helping households and community groups cut carbon emissions and slash energy bills, work is already underway to expand the scheme to neighbouring areas, starting with discussions in Swanland.

This grassroots approach directly aligns with the Lib Dem commitment to a "green transition" that tackles the climate crisis while helping ease the cost-of-living crisis through lower energy costs.

🏘️ Where should a brand new town go in East Riding?
With local housebuilding targets jumping to around 2,000 new homes a year, the Liberal Democrats are pushing to build a completely new town instead of just adding onto our already stretched villages.
If you were in charge of planning, where would you build a new town in East Riding and why? Drop your ideas below! 👇

🏡 NO SERVICES, NO DEVELOPMENT!👇

The Government is nearly DOUBLING housing targets for the East Riding—forcing our council to plan for a massive 1,975 new homes every single year.

But East Riding Liberal Democrats are sounding the alarm: our local infrastructure is already at breaking point. 🛑

Since 2015, our local GP surgeries have had to take on an extra 917 homes each. We cannot allow developers to keep throwing up massive housing estates without delivering the doctors, schools, and roads our communities desperately need.

Worse still, new legislation risks stripping away your local voice, handing planning decisions to unelected officials and marginalising your elected councillors.

We are fighting for an "infrastructure-first" approach. If developers don't provide the vital services existing and new residents need, they shouldn't get the green light.

📊 As members of our local community, your lived experiences are the most valuable resource we have to build a rock-solid evidence base. 💪 We are backing two brilliant initiatives designed to empower local people to take control of our streets:

1. Operation Snap: Put the Brakes on Bad Driving
2. Community Speedwatch: Empowering Our Villages

Liberal Democrats Welcome New Green Rewards App for East Riding Residents.

The East Riding Liberal Democrats have warmly welcomed the launch of a new sustainable travel rewards app across the region. The BetterPoints app, commissioned by East Riding of Yorkshire Council, encourages residents to leave their cars at home and choose healthier, greener ways to travel, such as walking, cycling, or taking the bus and train.

Anyone who lives, works, or studies in the East Riding can download the app to start earning points for every sustainable journey they make locally.

These points can be redeemed for shopping vouchers to spend at local independent businesses, high street shops, and major retailers. Alternatively, users can choose to turn their points into donations for vital charities, including national organizations like Marie Curie and the RNLI, alongside brilliant local causes such as WISHH and the Health Tree Foundation.

“This scheme proves that going green doesn’t cost people money, it can put money back in their pockets. By rewarding healthier travel choices, we’re helping residents save, supporting local businesses, and protecting the environment we all value. Liberal Democrats want a healthier, greener and more connected East Riding, and this is exactly the kind of practical initiative that helps make that happen.” Cllr Chris Dunhill

The scheme aims to boost physical activity, improve public health, and significantly reduce local carbon footprints by cutting down on car journeys.

Hessle Cemetery
A resident asked us to investigate why the north east corner of the cemetery had long grass while the rest is maintained. This section hasn’t had any burials in decades. There is an ongoing discussion at East Riding Council whether to leave this section unstrimmed and allow it to develop into a thriving wild habitat. This would support biodiversity, save on maintenance costs and encourage a more natural eco friendly way to manage a very old section of the cemetery.
We will report back.

Lib Dems Welcome Award-Winning Breakthrough for Greener, Smarter East Riding Streets 💡

The East Riding Liberal Democrats have warmly welcomed national recognition for a groundbreaking green project 🇬🇧 , hailing it as a major step forward in the fight against climate change and a testament to what progressive local action can achieve. 🌍

The Decarbonising Street Lighting scheme, led right here in East Riding; swept up two prestigious national accolades at the 2026 ADEPT President’s Awards. 🏆🏆

Double Award Win for Climate and Innovation 🌟
The project didn't just win praise for its environmental credentials 🌱 it was also crowned the winner for Deploying Digital Innovation and Technologies. 💻

By successfully securing £3.3 million in funding from the Department for Transport 💰 the initiative is proving that environmental responsibility and technological innovation go hand-in-hand. 🤝 The project explores how we can safely dim or adapt major road lighting as modern vehicle headlights become more advanced 🚗 — cutting unnecessary energy waste and protecting our night skies. 🌌

Safety and Sustainability Go Hand-in-Hand 🛣️🔒
Crucially, the scheme is demonstrating that cutting carbon does not mean compromising on public safety. 🛑 By utilising smart, passive safety upgrades alongside reduced lighting , the project is actually making roads clearer for drivers. 👀

"Evidence shows that replacing street lighting with highly visible alternative materials has maintained and in some cases improved, safety levels compared with before the lights were switched off," said Cllr Phil Redshaw, the East Riding of Yorkshire Council Liberal Democrat Environment and Transport Spokesperson. 📣

"By combining highly visible road markings, reflective signage and solar-powered road studs ☀️ — the scheme is proving that carbon reduction and road safety can go hand in hand." 🤝

Trials Underway on Vital Routes 📍
These cutting-edge innovations are already live — and they are being tested on two of our area's most critical commuter routes:
The A164 🛣️
The A1079 🚗

Looking to a Cleaner Future 💚
While celebrating this national success, the East Riding Liberal Democrats are urging the council to use this momentum to push even further. 🚀 Winning awards is a fantastic milestone 🎯 , but the ultimate goal must be rolling out these low-carbon technologies across every community in East Riding to drive down emissions, save taxpayers' money on energy bills 📉 and deliver a cleaner, greener future for everyone. 🍃
