With exam season on the horizon, Spiro offered a stress-free fun filled night putting skills to the test in a race to cook hot dogs!

It wasn't quite as simple as it sounds...

Working together in small teams, Explorers completed a series of tasks focusing on a range of core Scout skills and values to earn points and obtain their ingredients and cooking equipment!

Well done to those of you who had never used a Trangia before, you gave it a really good go! 👏

We also officially welcomed Jess, Poppy and Lottie into the Unit ⚜️ Looking good in blue ladies! 💙

This week Spiro were refreshing their knife skills - refocusing on safety and handling (blood bubble, triangle of death and the principles of using a knife).

Everyone made significant progress towards their Try Sticks. This is a learning tool which provides an excellent opportunity for us all to practice notches, reductions and chamfering.

Another session is needed to finish the Try Sticks, can't wait to see a fully complete Try Stick!

🥞🍋 Explorer Pancake Fest 🍋🥞

On Monday evening the Explorers were competing to serve up the best pancakes with our own Cordelia being the victim 🫣…………. we mean judge 🤫

Hiking out of Bushy to Tesco in the pouring 🌧️ each group was given a £5 budget to buy their ingredients. It was then back to bushy again in the 🌧️ to create their masterpieces with the following categories……….

1) Tastiest
2) Fluffiest
3) Most Creative
4) Spiro Themed
5) Free-Standing Structure

Here’s the highlights of an epic pancake showdown! 🥞🔥👇

Oh and no panckes needed for Cordelia on shrove Tuesday………:::: she’s had her fill for the year 🥞🤢😂

Tonight Spiro stepped inside the world of Pac-Man, where streets became the maze, corners replaced corridors, and teamwork was the key to survival! 👻👾

Whilst ultimately a wide game, tonight was a perfect demonstration of how we can practice key hiking skills such as route planning, pacing and stamina in a different way! 🧭 Afterall, not all hike practices needs to be a 5km march over the downs! 🤪

So, where will Pac-Man strike next? 🤔

Another great night last night!

Spiro's Activity Wear has landed and it looks fantastic, we now have an identity outside of our uniform! 🥳

We officially welcomed Moose and Dexter into Spiro 🫡 It's great to see not only the Unit itself growing but also enthusiasm for the program!

For those waiting eagerly for their chance to join, linking will begin in the New Year! 🙌

We were continuing to sharpen our knife skills last night.

For those who hadn't done knife work with Spiro before they started with some back to basic safety, handling and completed the first part of their Try Stick, before joining the rest of the Unit attempting a festive project.

We set our Explorers a challenge to carve a 2-tier snowman with a top hat! ⛄️

Many were able to grasp the basics, and now have the know-how and the tools to complete this project at home. We look forward to seeing the end results in the New Year!

What a night! 😅

⚜️ Kicking things off with a formal welcome to our latest investitures - John (Leader), Kyle, Zeb and Daniel. You're officially part of the ship and part of the crew! 🫡

🥾 Moving on to celebrating those who took part in the OP Triangle Competition this weekend and reflecting on the highs and lows... Would we do it again? 🤔 Yes!! 🙌

🎒 Next was all things Go Bags and compiling a list of what the Explorers feel they should bring with them to Be Prepared during Spiro Meetings!

🪢Tonight's core skill was Pioneering! Learning how to properly tie clove hitches and square lashings tight enough for future larger projects... There are some exciting plans coming together, but we need to master the basics first!

🏆 Closing the evening with some more celebration - We are very proud of Jonah for becoming our first Spiro Explorer to be awarded his Chief Scout Platinum Award - This is a fantastic award representing countless hours of hardwork well done! 👏

Spiro's ethos is to get outdoors despite the weather and last night we did just that.

We surprised our explorers with a lovely fire 🔥 and then introduced them to how to cook using Dutch Ovens.

Explorers tried 2 recipes using the Dutch Ovens. In one they made a trout stew (trout, potato, parsnip, carrots) and in the other they made small cakes (egg, flour and golden syrup).

We had mixed reviews for both, but no one can deny the versatile possibilities cooking with a Dutch Oven offers... what shall we try to cook next? 🤔

Explorers also got to try our new 'space rocket' burners and learned a fun and tasty pudding recipe they can replicate while on expeditions - apple crumble! (Dried apple, oaty biscuits, powdered custard).

This was without a doubt the hero of the night and all want to try it again, maybe even while out on their DofE in the future! 😅

It was great to see everyone getting stuck in and not afraid to get a little bit wet!

Last night it was “An Introduction to Tools” evening for the Explorers presented by Simon.

Simon showcased all the tools he has in his personal collection and explained what each one was used for. He even told us the names of some of them - the small axe being called chop chop and his larger one Gonzo the Great 😝

Afterwoods we all got to make a mushroom out of hazel practicing our knife skills both with technique and safety.

This is the second session Simon has ran with the Explorers as we teach them the proper uses of knifes, axes and saws in Scouting growing their confidence and our trust with then using them.

Really good results with the mushroom 🍄 carving a step up from the tent peg.

We also launched our new unit activity wear which is now available to purchase at the Treetops website.

Unit scarves, invested Explorers and now activity wear - it could be time to consider ourselves as a fully operational ESU 🫡⚜️
