Retford Wargames Group

Retford Wargames Group Retford Wargames Group meet on an informal basis, roughly once per month at members houses.

A wide selection of miniature games are played covering most periods from 3000BC to modern day warfare. Originally known as the 'Retford and District Peasants and Heathens Guild' and founded by school friends during the early '80's, they used to meet at Ordsall village hall to participate in role-play, board game and Ancients on a Tuesday evening. Some of the original members were Steve Vickers, S

imon Quanborough, Mark Nicolson and Mark Hunter. By the mid 80's some of the original members had left but a new wave of young players joined and the club was now at its peak with over 30 membership. However after being forced to move to a new venue, numbers dwindled until the group finally ceased gaming in the mid 90's. Some of its old membership are now members of Retford Wargames Group, who fondly remember those early days.

EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT: It is after much consideration and consultation that due to a change in my career circumstances that the Cannon Wargames show will cease. After 5 years of relative success and thankfully no organisational hic-ups I will melt away from the event scene generally because im now working weekends. The amount of work in organising an event is absolutely colossal but rewarding! Ill still manage to make it along to 3 or 4 events a year but its a long shot from the 20 or so I did by taking flyers and 'networking' to promote the Cannon event up and down the country. It just leaves me to contact a couple of traders who left deposits for the 2019 show. I would like to say a sincere THANK YOU to everyone who has attended in any format, as either Gamer, Trader or visitor and given us so much support. It’s been an epic journey of discovery and learning, meeting so many people and making many friends along the way. A very special thank you to the hand full of RWG helpers and Wargames Foundry for the sponsorship support. Also, I can’t finish without a mention for two people, Laurence J Baldwin and Richard Tyndall, who gave me wise words and inspiration to begin the project. Cheers and hopefully see you all soon.

Sorry I haven't posted for a while but i've been a little bit busy. I haven't done much in the way of wargaming, model making or painting! I'm surrounded by so much to do but i've lost a bit of our hobby mojo i'm afraid. Maybe its the hot weather? i've also recently changed career (Retail) and i'm focusing on that. Its working every weekend and bank holiday so consequently it will be a rare sight to see me at events. Sure, i'll have some 'holidays' but they will be earmarked for family and events I want to prioritise. Its likely to be Vapnartak (York), at least one Partizan (Newark), Hammerhead (Newark) and possibly Crisis (Antwerp) or Salute (London). That's it, 4 or 5 from about 20+ events per year. This will have a knock on effect for Cannon because I wont be able to network and promote at all the events I used to do. I'll have to have a serious think about that one.....

Many thanks to all those who came along and supported the Cannon show yesterday. My poor body is broken from moving and lifting many tables and my mind has turned to mush, it's the love of the hobby that's pushes you through I guess. Visitor numbers were around last years total, disappointing but void of ideas to improve it at the minute. I have witnessed a decline in most shows I've been to over the last couple of years and I suggest internet shopping plays a parting in that. Just a quick special thanks to Tony Phillips and Neil Walker for sharing the burden, Rich Goss and Co. For running the the BA tourney and well done to James Morris for picking up 'Best of show game' award for Crete 1941. Cheers and see most of you soon.

It can get quite busy at the front pay desk at the cannon event with a mixture of players, Traders and visitors all coming and going throughout the day. Therefore, we are giving out wrist bands to all taking part (except staff) in the show and to each paying guest. Please show this to the front desk to avoid the embarrassment of being asked to pay. Thank you.

Our source for designing the Cannon event flyers (just date and colour change really) has stopped due to work commitments. Does anyone know of a reasonably priced printers to print 1000 double sided flyers? 🤔
