East Finchley has been home to some incredible talent over the years.
Some of that talent has even graced the stage of our very own .

This shot of Amy Winehouse, who lived on Fortis Green, performing with the Buzz Junkies at East Finchley Festival in 2003 came to light after East Finchley Festival’s 50th anniversary celebrations last year.

East Finchley Festival is currently on the look out for more undiscovered talent and is inviting applications from performers. If you think this might be you, please head to eastfinchleyfestival.org/take-part to apply.

Why is there an archer statue on top of East Finchley station?

The archer statue, created by sculptor Eric Aumonier from lead covered timber, was unveiled in July 1940 and represents the area’s association with hunting.
East Finchley station stands at what was once one of the three gates to The Bishop of London’s Hunting Park, the other two gates being at The Spaniards Inn in Hampstead and The Gatehouse in Highgate.
He points his bow directly down the tunnel towards central London, but his arrow is nowhere to be seen. Urban myth has it that there was once an arrow at Morden, which was stolen, but there is no evidence of this.

The speed of the arrow was also thought to be a fitting metaphor for the modern electric trains which were to serve the newly opened underground railway.

Who remembers these? The Pochoir Pumpkins mysteriously appeared on a wall near the Noble Sage gallery on Fortis Green in late 2009, but vanished again 6 months later. Barnet Council denied responsibility for their removal. Did artist Pochoir come back and paint them out again? We’ll never know.
