Hello from All at Orkney Marinas.

It has been a busy week with lots happening at the marinas and the berths are filling up fast, particularly with the increased wind just now.

Whenever you arrive, the attendants will be on site between 0900-1000 and 1700-1800 so please make contact with them as soon as possible after your arrival. They may ask you to move to ensure everyone gets a berth for the night.

We had a few unusual visitors this week which I have shared with you.

Have a great weekend, wherever you are

Neil

Well done to all who competed in the Whitehills to Kirkwall yacht race at the weekend.

Our chairman Brian took part with his team and although having a considerable lead, once the handicap system was in place the winner was announced as yacht Dignity.

Crew photo as follows L to R:-

Michael Miller, Brian Kynoch, Harky Hutchison and Liam Alexander

From Brians report:-

"That’s the Whitehills to Kirkwall Yacht Race over for another year. Catherine J 2 had a cracking sail north to the finish line at Copinsay in a time of 14 hours 23 mins, 10 hours with the spinnaker up ! Unfortunately despite having a lead of around an hour the fast handicap winner was “Dignity” who were also last years winners.
Actual/corrected times ;
Catherine J 2 14h23 mins/ 11h 23mins
Dignity 15h19mins/10h 54mins"

Enjoy your week

Wherever you are

We look forward to seeing you next year.

Good afternoon and welcome to all the new visitors and thank you to those who have left.

I will be in Stromness first thing Friday 22nd so the Kirkwall office will only open at 1000.

A package has arrived for Aquarelle and can be collected at the office until 1330. If not collected by then I will pop down to the marina cabin before I leave.

The marina teams will be on site as normal.

Have a lovely evening

Good morning from Orkney Marinas.

Today is Norway's Constitution day and myself, Brian and Kenny have been brightening up the Marina with bunting and Norwegian flags.

The Norwegian Constitution, adopted on 17 May 1814, is one of the oldest written constitutions in the world and establishes Norway as a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system.
The Constitution was drafted and signed by the Norwegian Constituent Assembly at Eidsvoll on 16–17 May 1814, following Norway’s separation from Denmark after the Treaty of Kiel. Crown Prince Christian Frederik led the independence movement, aiming to secure Norway’s sovereignty and possibly reunification with Denmark. The Constitution was influenced by the United States Declaration of Independence (1776), the French Revolution (1789), and the Spanish Constitution of 1812, blending republican ideals with a retained monarchy to ensure stability and continuity. Kirkwall will be buzzing with the celebrations and the passengers from the 2 visiting liners, MSC Preziosa and Le Laperouse.

Enjoy Constitution day and the rest of your weekend, wherever you are

The Kirkwall Lifeboat Station crew will host an Open Day on Saturday 16 May to raise awareness of the work of the RNLI and its volunteers. We hope you will join us to make the day as successful as previous years.

Orkney will wish ‘Gratulerer Med Dagen’ to our Norwegian friends this weekend as Norwegian Constitution Day is marked in the county.

‘Gratulerer Med Dagen’ is Norwegian for ‘congratulations on your day’ and is a traditional greeting on Norwegian Constitution Day.

Norwegian Constitution Day, celebrated annually on 17 May, marks the signing of Norway’s constitution in 1814 at Eidsvoll, establishing the country’s independence and democratic foundations.

Various events will take place in Kirkwall on Sunday (17 May) including the annual Tog parade from Kirkwall Pierhead to St Magnus Cathedral setting off at 3:00pm and followed by speeches outside and then a concert in St Magnus Cathedral. Members of the public- including local school children – are warmly invited to take part in the parade.
