HMS Duncan, proudly known as “Dundee’s Own,” returned to Dundee Harbour earlier this month for a short resupply visit following a demanding month‑long deployment in the Arctic Circle. During this period, the Type 45 destroyer supported NATO aircraft and vessels and shadowed Russian incursions in the region — a reminder of the ship’s vital role in safeguarding European waters.

The visit also marked the first opportunity for the Nine Incorporated Trades of Dundee to welcome Commander James Mitchell, who assumed command of HMS Duncan earlier this year, succeeding Commander Dan Lee. Like all Royal Navy appointments, leadership evolves through promotion and tenure, but the ship’s bond with Dundee has remained constant since her commissioning in 2010.

Past Deacon Convener Alex Coupar, a long‑standing friend of the ship and still remarkably energetic at 93 years young, was invited aboard during the vessel’s stay in port. The Nine Trades — particularly the Bonnetmakers and Weavers — have enjoyed the company of HMS Duncan’s Commanders and Executive Officers at Craft dinners and suppers over many years, strengthening a unique civic‑naval relationship.

During the visit, Past Deacon Convener Coupar presented Commander Mitchell with a Nine Trades tie, a copy of Innes Duffus’s book on the Nine Trades and a Dundee cake generously provided by Goodfellow & Steven.

These gifts symbolise the enduring friendship between the ship, her crew, and the City of Dundee.

After coffee in the Captain’s cabin, Lieutenant Brandon De Santis, Officer of the Watch, escorted the Past Deacon Convener on a brief tour of the ship.

The accompanying photograph records the moment Commander James Mitchell received his Nine Incorporated Trades of Dundee tie from Past Deacon Convener Coupar — a small but meaningful gesture that continues a proud tradition of mutual respect between Dundee and HMS Duncan.

The recent Duncan of Jordanstone Degree Show once again highlighted the depth of talent emerging from one of Scotland’s most respected art and design schools.

This year’s event carried an added note of distinction as representatives from The Tailor Craft- Brian Cunningham and Euan Williamson -attended to present a series of special awards recognising outstanding student achievement.

Three students were selected for awards this year, each recognised for the individuality and technical strength of their work:

Jill Geddes
Amy Mowatt
Hannah Thompson

While each student’s project differed in theme and medium, all three demonstrated the qualities that The Tailor Craft seeks to champion - dedication to process, clarity of vision, and a commitment to pushing the boundaries of their discipline.

The Baker Trade of Dundee was delighted to support and judge the recent Afternoon Tea Competition held at Dundee and Angus College's Kingsway Campus Taste Bar, where Patisserie and Confectionery students showcased an impressive range of skills, creativity and professionalism.

Over the course of five weeks, students worked individually or in pairs to design, prepare and present themed afternoon tea experiences. Their entries demonstrated not only technical ability but also a strong understanding of flavour, presentation and customer experience—qualities essential to success in our industry.

Baker Trade members were proud to award prizes to the following talented students:

🥇 Nina Watson – Cocktails and Antipasti
🥈 Courtney Easton & Samuel Gardiner – Spring in Bloom
🥉 Nataliia Sakhnovska & Adam Skinner – Mad Hatter’s Tea Party

Each winning entry stood out for its creativity, ex*****on and attention to detail, reflecting the high standard of training delivered at the college.

As part of our ongoing commitment to nurturing emerging talent, members of the Baker Trade of Dundee were pleased to provide both sponsorship and judging for the competition. Engaging directly with students allowed craft members to share industry insight, offer encouragement and help inspire the next generation of bakers, pâtissiers and hospitality professionals.

The Baker Trade of Dundee look forward to continuing their partnership and supporting further opportunities that help young people develop the skills and confidence needed to thrive in the industry.

Members of the Craft were deeply honoured to welcome the Aberdeen Shoemakers Incorporation, led by Deacon Barney Crockett, as special guests at the Apex Hotel. Representatives from many of the Dundee Trades also joined the occasion, strengthening bonds across Scotland’s craft and trade communities.

A fantastic night of fun and fundraising took place as the Weaver and Bonnetmaker Crafts hosted a lively Charity Quiz Night at Downfield Musical Society — raising over £700 in support of Dundee Bairns.

Teams went head‑to‑head across five themed rounds, tackling everything from guess the brand logo to the crowd‑favourite Ikea or Cheese? as they battled for the top spot. The competitive spirit was high, but the laughter was even louder.

A special thank‑you goes to Scott Brothers, whose generous half‑time buffet kept everyone fuelled and added to the warm, social atmosphere enjoyed by craft members and guests alike.

Dee Pearce from Dundee Bairns joined in the fun and personally thanked Steven Dewar, Deacon of the Bonnetmakers, and Sheena Wellington, Deacon of the Weavers, for their continued support of the charity’s work with local children.

A brilliant evening, a brilliant cause, and a brilliant community effort.

The Dyers recently donated £250 towards a silver ring-making workshop for a group of five people being supported by Transform Community Development Dundee.

Duncan of Jordanstone graduate and founder of Dundee Community Craft CIC, Stephanie Graham, ran the workshop. The ethos of her business is to be a vibrant organisation dedicated to empowering individuals within the community through the art of crafting and to transform lives one piece of jewellery at a time. Her mission is to help those adversely affected by poverty, complex trauma, and substance use through the healing power of craft.

Transform Recovery Worker, Ben Mackay said,

''I couldn't praise the activity any higher. Stephanie was fantastic with the group and made them feel at ease, providing a fantastic experience for them. It was noted how confident, happy and comfortable within the group they were which is not always the case for some of these who suffer from anxiety in social or group environments.''

Ben shared photographs of the group creating their rings and proudly showing them at the end of the session. Many of the rings were gifted to family members who had helped them overcome difficult circumstances.

Dyers Deacon, Wendy Maltman, said,

“This project reflects our desire to align our charitable giving closely to our creative heritage, enabling others to participate in creative activities and perhaps inspire them to consider careers in the creative industries”.

Photo’s show participants enjoying making a silver ring and feedback provided illustrated how much they gained from the experience.

Dyers welcome six new members at their annual supper

Dyers Deacon, Wendy Maltman, was delighted to induct a record number of new members at their recent Supper held at the Woodlands Hotel on 6th of May.

Convening a special meeting, Dyers gathered to warmly welcome Beth Bate, Director, and Shelley Barclay Horban, Head of Development at Dundee Contemporary Arts; former STV reporter, Craig Millar; Gail Robertson, Philanthropy Manager and Sam Edmond, Head of Partnerships at V&A Dundee; and creative cultural practitioner, Lynne Campbell.

Following a hearty supper, members and their guests heard an enthusiastic talk from Mike Stirling, Creative Director (and Director of Mischief) at the Beano, who shared how advancements in printing had shaped the comic over many years. The transition from Dennis’s iconic red and black jersey to the recent inclusion of yellow and blue designed to enhance the comic’s appeal to children, craft members were provided with an engaging perspective on Dundee’s renowned publication.

Deacon Convenor John Fyffe MBE provided a report on behalf of the Nine Trades, and mindful of the evening’s theme, he also brought along the colourful Comics and Characters panel from the Dundee Tapestry.

Shelley Barclay Horban gave the response on behalf of the new members and was subsequently elected as the Clerk of the Dyers.

Celebrating all things Beano, new Craft member, Lynne Campbell brought the memorable evening to a suitable close, with a rendition of Sheena Wellington’s song, “The Dandy and the Beano”.
