A long day of training today. A story of two halves. Five crew members took part in water safety training upstream from Dumfries, with one of our most recent recruits completing her initial training, enabling her to become the latest to be 'on call' crew. Well done, Nic! 👏👏👏 In the afternoon, three crew members launched St John on an international mission to cross the Solway and say hello to our friends at Silloth RNLI Lifeboat and to congratulate the English on coming third in the World Cup. 🙂Always good to catch up with our RNLI neighbours.

Top tip from HM Coastguard ⤵

It’s really important that you label kayaks, canoes, paddles, paddleboards, inflatables, and any craft you take on the water. It means that if they are reported as having been blown out to sea or 'abandoned' around the coast, the Coastguard can get in contact with you to ensure that you are OK.

You can order a free waterproof label from HM Coastguard here: https://f.mtr.cool/szhglwscuuhttps

If your craft goes missing, please tell the Coastguard straight away, giving a description of the craft (ideally sharing images with then for identification) and where and when it was last seen.

If the equipment is found drifting at sea or found around the coasts, the Coastguard have to assume the worst, but if they can quickly identify and locate the craft owner this can avoid unnecessary search and rescue activities.

We’re really looking to joining Kippford RNLI at their Open Day, it’s always a great event and a rare opportunity for the whole family of Solway lifeboats to come together in one place.

Part of our local Solway search and rescue family are Nith Inshore Rescue and Maryport Rescue. Operating as independent lifeboat services both boats work closely with their RNLI colleagues to provide lifesaving cover around the coast.
It's always great to have them at our open day and is a good chance to see the similarities and differences between their boats and the RNLI fleet.

Kippford Lifeboat Open Day - Saturday 1st August - 12-3pm

Our weather station is showing it is a scortcher of a day. Please take extreme care in and around water if you are looking to cool off. Our waterways and coastlines hide many dangers, including sinking sand/ mud, fast-moving currents, and tides. Cold water shock is a real danger in extreme heat, given the temperature difference. Please stay safe and look after each other.
