Harmony Community Trust at Glebe House

Harmony Community Trust at Glebe House We engage with organisations and groups, locally and throughout N.Ireland, to run programmes and activities using Glebe House Hct facilities and resources.

At Glebe House Hct (Harmony Community Trust) we work together to build positive relations, health and well-being for adults, young people and children in a shared, safe, fun and inclusive environment through programmes and activities. Glebe House Hct is a charitable organisation, situated in the tranquil village of Kilclief near Strangford, Northern Ireland, which has been promoting social inclusi

on and positive community relations in Northern Ireland for almost 50 years. Whilst our society and community have changed since 1975, Glebe House Hct continues to provide a shared, safe, fun and inclusive environment that welcomes and supports people of all ages to come together to work, play and develop relationships. Today, we engage with individuals, groups and communities to contribute to a peaceful, fair, inclusive society that respects diversity; a society that values each person's humanity, dignity, aspirations and needs; one in which people challenge sectarian, national, ethnic or social stereotypes, and challenge disadvantage, marginalisation and exclusion; a society in which each person can be an agent of positive change in their own life and the lives of others. We deliver focused programmes, activities and learning opportunities for individuals and organisations that help build participants’ confidence, resilience and self-esteem. We promote cross-community programmes and projects concerning local history and environmental understanding, respect and sustainability, as part of our common natural and cultural heritage. This rare Spotted Flycatcher was captured this week at Glebe and it makes us wonder what other beautiful species we may have on our site!

Come visit us this weekend for Bioblitz weekend to find out!

SPOTTED FLYCATCHER
Status: 🔴
Rarity Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The elite tier of true, instinctive, high‑skill aerial insect hunters is, in Ireland at least, crowned by the Spotted Flycatcher. With surgical precision, this diminutive assassin launches from his perch, snatching insects mid‑air with sublime accuracy. Unlike Hirundines, he does not give frantic chase. Instead, he waits — concealed in lush spring canopies — reading air currents, tracking tiny movements, calculating interception points, and timing his sally to perfection. Minimal energy spent; maximum payoff. A quiet, efficient, and utterly lethal hunter.

Now the sad part. The Spotted Flycatcher's centuries old relationship with Ireland is under immense pressure. Declines in returning individuals are observed year-on-year, due to migration problems, tree loss, insect population decline and more. Harmony Community Trust at Glebe House provides a lush green, insect-rich sanctuary for this once prominent species. I observed this individual today flitting in-and-out of the tall trees and orchard, before perching in front of the old shed where he performed some of his trademark hunting manoeuvres- like watching God’s calmest assassin at work.

Swifts were also present.
