From the First Sunrise to the White Cliffs: My Journey to Dover 🌅~🏰

I originally come from Kiribati, a nation of islands that holds a unique place in the world. It is the only island nation where the first sunrise of the day is greeted, the very place where the world’s day begins 🌅

Moving from a tropical paradise where it is summer all year round to the coast of England was a massive change, but Dover is now where I call home.

Though the landscapes are different, I’ve found a new kind of magic here. I’ve traded the Pacific horizon for the iconic White Cliffs and the deep historical roots of Kent. Dover offers a unique blend of coastal beauty and a practical connectivity that keeps me moving:

The World at my Doorstep: The high-speed rail link gets me to London St Pancras in just over an hour, and with the Ferries and Eurotunnel so close, a trip to France is just a spontaneous decision away.

A Place to Grow: Beyond the scenery, the people, schools here are amazing, and having the majestic Dover Castle as a daily backdrop is a constant bonus.

From the first light of the world in Kiribati to the historic shores of Dover, I am proud to call this corner of England my home.

“I just want to say, every day is a new day. We saw the New Year in, and today we made a decision to actually come out, not just stay at home festering. And we did it. We’ve had a lovely day, just watching everyone enjoying themselves. I’m really happy we’ve managed to come out as a family and embrace the new year with a positive attitude.
Honestly, I’m all for the positivity. We’ve got to keep it up, because life feels really heavy at the moment, for us and for everyone. But this, just coming out… yay, positivity. Hope, peace. Everyone’s just a bit more chilled today, and it’s lovely. That’s rare.
I only live 20 minutes away, and every year I say I’m going to come down to the beach, because it’s peaceful, grounding, just lovely. And we never do. But we’re here.
Dover can feel quite disgruntled, and I think we all just need to be a bit more positive together, a bit kinder. Everyone’s going through something. You don’t know what that is. So just treat people with a bit of kindness, patience, and love.
It’s so easy to get stuck in your head, to let the darker side take over. We hide away at home. We’ve all got stuff going on, mental health-wise, and we just retreat. It’s hard dealing with other people’s frustration when it sets off your own. But if everyone was just a little calmer, a little more chilled, I think the world would move along a bit better.”

“My ADHD is really kicking off, honestly, there’s so much in my head it feels overwhelming. I’m out of my comfort zone here. I don’t get out a lot because of my health and everything else, so this is different. But it’s nice, the sun’s really warm, even if it’s a bit windy. Soak it up.”

I’d like to get Dover more improved. More jobs, more shops. I want a Primark, desperate, really want a Primark, especially the girls. Because you have to travel to Folkestone all the time. But it would be nice, because we’ve got quite a lot of land still. It’s decent, cheap. Maybe another bowling alley or something for the children to go to. Parents haven’t got the money because we have to keep travelling far, but it would be nice to have something in Dover.

“I’ve not been well recently, but I’ve got myself better. I’m now walking around. I have Crohn’s disease, so I have a stoma bag now, and I almost died and I hit rock bottom.

It perforated and I collapsed at home. Blood everywhere, blue lighted in. I had stoma bag, and that was seven years ago. So had a lot of operations and things in between, and still not in the greatest health in that respect, but I built myself up again and now go to the gym.

And, you know, I was very, very underweight, really, really like, on death’s door.. And I’ve worked myself back up. I live with my parents and I look after my parents, and my partner’s just recently moved in, and I’m a lot healthier and happier.

I’ve been living here for 42 years. People think Dover isn’t that great, but we’ve got the castle and quite a lot going on. It’s quite a family place, not too much trouble here.”
