Here at ND Dorch we recognise the intersection between the LGBTQ+ community and neurodivergence.

Neurodivergent people are much more likely to also be part of the LGBTQ+ community than the rest of the population are.

We also recognise the challenges that can be present due to these.

Our private fb group has anonymous posting and nicknames switched on to allow people to access peer support while maintaining their own privacy.

This can be vital for those of us who don't have a supportive network but need to be honest about who we are, or to talk freely if we are questioning.

Shire Hall has been an incredible pillar for Dorchester, hosting vital community events and education programs.

We want to say a huge thank you to the team and all the wonderful volunteers who worked so hard to create an inclusive, safe, and welcoming environment.

They have been deeply supportive of us in allowing us the use of their meeting room for our guided talks and being friendly and welcoming to all our members.

We are thinking of all the staff and volunteers affected by the news this week.

Thank you Shire Hall Museum 🙏

Guess where I'll be tomorrow morning?!

That's right, I'll be back on BBC Dorset with Steve Harris on the Breakfast Show catching up with what Neurodivergent Dorchester has been doing over the last year.

I'll be on air from around 8am, but you can tune in before to catch the whole show!

If you've ever wondered what we're all about or wanted to come to one of our meets but not been too sure, this week will be the perfect opportunity to come and say hi!

We're having a community picnic in Borough Gardens and you're welcome to join us!

Here is all the information:

Thursday 20th August (this thursday)

12 noon to 4pm

The Borough Gardens, Dorchester, Dorset

Meeting at the top by the picnic tables, play park and kiosk (hopefully if it's available)

As this is a different sort of social meet to our usual ones I'll give a little information about what to expect.

• Bring your own food and drink

• Bring your own blankets and/or chairs

Music

We'd love to have some musical accompaniment! Please bring an acoustic instrument if you can play and would like to provide some ambiance!

Games

If you have any lawn games you'd like to bring for us to play that would be welcome! And other types of games such as cards or board games too.

Weather

Currently my weather app is saying it will be warm (22°C) with a couple of light showers in the afternoon. As we know that can all change! If the rain gets a heavier forecast the day before I will probably cancel, but I'm hoping the forecast will change for the brighter!

In case of cancellation I will look to postpone until the following week.

Last year our picnic was a lovely relaxed afternoon with several people and families arriving at different points throughout the day and leaving as and when.

There will be no set time for eating or any activities, you are welcome to arrive and leave at any point and stay for as long or as little as you like.

There is no obligation to bring food, blankets or chairs, games or music, if you'd like to just pop along and say hi and not stop that's also welcome.

A small table will be set out with some of our resources that can be borrowed and our sensory tools etc. This table will have posters with our logo on to help you spot us!

Children are welcome and we will (hopefully) be sat within view of the play park.

Wow!

We now have 500 members in our community group here on Facebook!

Our group is active with regular posts about special interests and hobbies, wins we've had and the occasional rant!

Members are supportive and welcoming with varied interests and needs... we endeavour to create a space welcoming for everyone.

We share information regarding our social meets and other things happening in the community here.

Our little group is celebrating our one year anniversary and you are invited!

We have over 470 members in our Facebook group and around 30 people that regularly attend our in person social meets.

Tuesday 21st April
12noon to 4pm
The King's Arms

This will run in the same way our usual social meets do - it will be relaxed and people are welcome to drop in or out at any time.

If you've been curious about our meets this would be a good opportunity to come and say hi and find out what we're all about!
