Doncaster Danum Scouts Adventure. Friendship. Skills for life. Supporting over 1,300 young people across Doncaster through camps, activities and everyday adventures for ages 4–18.

Helping young people gain confidence, learn new skills and explore the outdoors. Scouting is about personal development through providing opportunity. It encourages young people of all backgrounds, male and female, to have self-belief and a voice; to develop physically, intellectually, socially and spiritually. We call this everyday adventure. They just call it fun. We believe that young people de

velop most when they are 'learning by doing', when they are given responsibility, work in teams, take acceptable risks and think for themselves. Why do we believe that? Well, because they told us. Scouting is a youth movement, meaning its the young people that drive it forward. To provide everyday adventure to young people we need adult volunteers. These adults not only benefit from supporting young people, they also gain from developing themselves and learning new skills. All of which they apply to their everyday working lives. There are lots of flexible volunteering opportunities to suit you and your needs, whatever the amount of time you have to give.

⚜️ Leader Spotlight of the Day ⚜️

Meet Akela (aka Liz)

I’ve been a Leader for nearly 55 years, and I wouldn’t trade a single moment of it.

I volunteer because I love giving back to my community and ensuring our young people always have something fun and exciting to look forward to each week.

Scouting has changed a lot over the decades! My favorite memory takes me back to my first camp in Anglesey. Back then, we had to dig our own latrines—a process that involved a lot of hard work, a lot of soil, and quite a bit of chaos involving a dirty shovel! 🤣

One afternoon, our Scouts were in such a hurry to set up the ladies' toilet tent that they built it back to front. One of our leaders, desperate to use it, dashed inside—only for the whole tent to collapse halfway through! There she was, sat on a bucket in the middle of the mayhem for all to see.

And don’t get me started on the time the Scouts decided to hitchhike back to camp with a stranger to start dinner! In those days, they were completely unfazed—mostly because they were all carrying a ‘dirk’ in their socks!

We’ve had so many adventures over the years, and I’m so proud to still be part of this movement.

⚜️ Leader Spotlight of the Day ⚜️

Meet Badger (aka Katie)

My scouting story began when I was just 6 years old. Over the years, I’ve been a Beaver, Cub, Scout, Explorer, and Young Leader. Now, I’m so proud to be part of the leadership team as the Beaver Team Leader and a joint Group Lead Volunteer!

I absolutely love spending time with the children, teaching them new skills, and watching their confidence and personalities grow as they move through the sections. I feel so lucky to have had so many incredible adventures during my time in Scouts, and it’s a privilege to be able to pass those same experiences on to the next generation.

My absolute favourite memory has to be spending 3 weeks in Madagascar—I met some truly incredible people and had the adventure of a lifetime.

Being a volunteer is incredibly rewarding, and I’m so grateful to be part of such a fantastic movement.

⚜️ Leader Spotlight of the Day ⚜️

Meet Chil (aka Rachel)

I started my Scouting journey when I was 6 months old and 38 years later, I’m still loving every minute of it as a Cub leader.

My favorite memory? Trying to convince a group of exhausted Cubs and Scouts that Squirrel Wood was “just down the road” when we’d actually accidentally added an extra 2 miles to our hike! They were tired, but we made it eventually—and they were all smiles in the end.

Helping these kids gain confidence and learn new skills is the most rewarding experience. Here’s to all the volunteers who make Scouting happen!
