There are still places available for the fascinating talk by author Tom Hughes who is travelling all the way from America to speak about his recently published book 'A Shattered Idol: The Lord Chief Justice and His Troublesome Women' on 20 May at The Mint, Exeter.

The Coleridge family of Ottery St Mary is known around the world in part because of the poetic genius of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, but also because of his nephew Sir John Taylor Coleridge and great-nephew, Lord Chief Justice John Duke Coleridge, the first Baron Coleridge (1820-94).

Tom Hughes has written the first complete account of the separate but nearly simultaneous domestic crises that overshadowed the last decade-plus of his lordship's life.

Dr James Downs will be telling us about early photography and the first studios which opened in Devon in the 1830's. We'll get to see some very old cameras as well as examples of Daguerrotypes (highly detailed mirror finished images on silver plated copper sheets), carte-des-visites and lantern slides. In addition, we will see photographic booklets, prints, postcards and other photographic accessories from the 19th century - many very specific to Devon.

See you all next Monday May 18th!!

Earlier this year RAMM purchased a 1,130 year old Saxon silver penny dating to the reign of King Alfred the Great. 🪙 It’s only about the size of a modern 20p, but is hugely important to the history of Exeter. Not only is it the first coin to be made in Exeter but, in many ways, it marks the start of modern Exeter.

Join us on 15 Jan 2026 for an online talk with RAMM’s Assistant Curator Tom Cadbury. Tom will tease out the stories behind the object – how this coin was made, why it was so important to Exeter’s existence, how it came to be re-discovered and how, after a 150 year chase, it finally came home to Exeter.
