📖 Halloween Ghost Tales with Madeline McCully – Armstrong Storytelling Trust

Settle in with storyteller Madeline McCully for an atmospheric session of ghost stories inspired by the Waterside. Discover spooky tales, local legends and stories that bring our neighbourhood’s history and imagination to life!

🌿 Spooky Sounds & Smells: Mindfulness with Nuala McKeever

Get into the Halloween spirit with a gentle mindfulness session led by Nuala McKeever, exploring spooky sounds and smells. Take time to slow down, tune into your senses and experience the garden in a whole new way.

🍲 Warm food, warm drinks & good company

In between the two sessions, enjoy hot soup, sandwiches and a comforting mug of tea, with plenty of time to chat, connect and enjoy the company of others.

🧣 A cosy welcome awaits!

We want everyone to feel comfortable and relaxed, whatever the autumn weather brings. Heaters and warm blankets will be provided to help keep everyone snug while enjoying this special outdoor gathering.

Buster Keaton Classics: The hilarious slapstick comedies Neighbors (1920) and One Week (1920) - exploring fences, neighbours, and chaotic houses!

Roberta Cantow’s Clotheslines (1981): A beautiful, lyrical look at the shared histories and connections woven between households.

**What if you could turn an entire room into a camera?**

Join us on **26th & 27th September** at the **Waterside Women’s Centre** for a special **Camera Obscura & Pinhole Photography Workshop**, as part of **Waterside Together**, our PEACEPLUS shared green spaces project.

See below for details:

A **camera obscura** is a darkened room where light enters through a small opening, projecting an image of the outside world onto the walls inside.

For this workshop, we’ll transform an **entire room at the Waterside Women’s Centre** into a giant camera obscura.
From inside the room, you’ll be able to **watch the world go by on Spencer Road, with views stretching up towards Ebrington — seeing the outside world reflected inside the room.**

You’ll have the chance to experience the **historic science behind the large camera obscura**, exploring how light, lenses and exposure have been used to create images for centuries.

**MAKE YOUR OWN CAMERA!**
Participants will then create their own **working pinhole camera obscura** and experiment with light and exposure to capture their own images.

**FROM LIGHT TO PRINT**
You’ll also get to experience **darkroom printing**, producing your own **black and white photographs using one of the oldest forms of photography**.

It’s a hands-on opportunity to explore the science, history and creativity of photography — from seeing the outside world projected inside a room, to making your own camera and creating your own photographic prints.

**CONNECTING PEOPLE & SHARED SPACES**
This connects to the heart of **Waterside Together**: exploring how shared spaces can bring people together and encouraging us to see the places around us in new ways.

🏠✨ For this workshop, we’ll transform an entire room at the Waterside Women’s Centre into a giant camera obscura.

👁️ From inside the room, you’ll be able to watch the world go by on Spencer Rd, with views stretching up towards Ebrington — seeing the outside world reflected inside the room. 🌳🏘️🚶‍♀️🚗

It’s a chance to slow down and look at a familiar shared space in a completely different way — noticing the people, movement, buildings and green spaces that surround us. 🌿👨‍👩‍👧‍👦🏙️

This connects to the heart of Waterside Together: exploring how shared spaces can bring people together and encouraging us to see the places around us in new ways.

🔄 By turning our view of the outside world inside, we’ll be thinking about the connections between people, communities and the shared spaces that sit between them.

📸 And we'll be making pinhole cameras too!

As part of our Intergenerational Photography Programme, participants will make their own pinhole cameras and use them to create photographs, experimenting with the same basic principles of light and image-making. ✨

🌿 Looking Back at the Waterside Together Shared Green Spaces Festival 🌿

We're excited to share this wonderful video looking back at the recent Waterside Together Festival weekend at Woodburn Urban Park.

Captured by videographer Sean Óg Morrow , this video showcases the fun, friendship and community spirit that made the weekend such a memorable celebration. From circus activities with In Your Space Circus, Qi Gong sessions with Feel Free Tai Chi, bug hotel and wind chime making with The Conservation Volunteers, rhymes and games with An Cultúrlann, yoga for children with Michael, community singing with Music Kin, a special live performance by a group of young people who participated in the Waterside Together-Nerve Centre Music Hothouse, to amateur baking competition for children and adults judged by Laurent Pirone of Oui Bakery, barbecue, ice cream and plenty of opportunities to connect, there was something for everyone to enjoy.

The festival was all about bringing people together and celebrating our shared green spaces. As a cross-community initiative, Waterside Together helps reimagine local parks and open spaces as welcoming, inclusive places where everyone can come together, build relationships and enjoy the outdoors.

A huge thank you to all of our facilitators and performers, to for putting on a great show! and for our volunteers and everyone who joined us over the weekend and helped make it such a success.

Looking for a meaningful and creative activity to share this summer?

Join renowned puppeteer Karen Torley of Banyan Theatre for a magical week of shadow puppetry, storytelling, and creativity in this special intergenerational workshop programme.

Designed for children aged 7–12, this workshop is all about creating together. Children attend alongside a parent, guardian, grandparent, or another special adult in their life, making it a wonderful opportunity to spend quality time together, learn new skills, and create lasting memories through art and storytelling.

Whether it's mum, dad, granny, grandad, an aunt, uncle, family friend, or another trusted grown-up, you'll work side-by-side to design puppets, invent stories, and bring them to life through shadow theatre.

🌟 Explore light, colour, and visual storytelling

Families, friends, and the wider community will be invited to attend and see what participants have created throughout the week, making it a truly memorable celebration of creativity, connection, and collaboration.
