❗The highest su***de rate in England is among men aged 45-49 years ❗

These are often men in the middle of life.
Fathers.
Partners.
Business owners.
Carers.
People carrying enormous pressure while appearing to cope.

Mental health struggles don't always look like a crisis, sometimes they look like exhaustion, withdrawal, anger, stress or loneliness.

✨Monday Mention✨

Meet committee member, Steve!

Hi I’m Steve, I signed up to go be a baton bearer and walk with the baton due my own personal experience of mental health and after several attempts of su***de in 2024/2025.

My background in event work was put to use on the day when I was asked to help run the events at Cathedral Green and that ignited a passion to help form linking hope.

Alongside Emma P we will be looking after the events side of things for linking hope, so any ideas or suggestions for events please get in touch with us!

❗More than 6,000 people died by su***de in England and Wales in 2023. That's over 16 lives lost every single day. ❗

The su***de rate reached its highest level since 1999.

Behind every statistic is a son, daughter, parent, friend, colleague or neighbour.

Someone who mattered.

Someone who may have felt they had nowhere to turn.

Su***de prevention starts with connection.

At Linking Hope we want to bring as many charities, organisations, and individuals together as possible. We want to connect people to ensure they are able to reach out for support when it is needed. 💜💛💚💙

Do you have a project that you need support with? and don't have the funds?

Why not look into Match My Project! ✨✨

Match My Project provides a platform for business and community to come together and improve their local area. It matches the resources of business with the local know-how of community organisations to get things done.

As a community organisation, you can use the site to upload your projects and accept help from businesses offering to support you.

Many of the community projects that receive help from businesses are supporting East Midlands Combined County Authority’s strategic objectives and vulnerable groups, currently including: jobs & skills, children, health, housing & homelessness and climate change. But don’t worry if your project doesn’t fit within these themes, you can still upload it!

Check out their website below ⬇⬇

❗Research consistently shows that social connection, peer support and early intervention can improve mental wellbeing and reduce feelings of isolation. Mental health support works, particularly when people access it early❗

Linking Hope work with a range of charities, organisations and individuals that offer peer support to those experiencing difficulties with their mental health.

Our website tells you more about these organisations and how you can access their support.

They died.

But even after death, we can still add to the stigma.

When someone dies from cancer, we don't say they 'committed cancer'
When someone dies from a heart attack, we don't say they 'committed a heart attack'

Yet many people still say "committed su***de."

The word "committed" is often associated with crime, guilt and wrongdoing. It can imply blame towards someone who was experiencing overwhelming emotional pain.
That's why many mental health and su***de prevention organisations encourage the use of:
✅ "Died by su***de"
✅ "Took their own life"

Instead of:
❌ "Committed su***de"

Changing one phrase won't change the statistics. But it can change conversations.

It can reduce shame ❗
It can challenge stigma ❗
It can make it easier for someone to ask for help ❗

Because people struggling with suicidal thoughts don't need judgement. They need hope. They need compassion. They need connection.

Let's stop talking as though su***de is a crime.
Let's start talking as though every life matters. 💚💜💛

📣There were loads of people! Great vibe, positive conversations, real sense of purpose📣

This was some recent feedback from one of our networking events! Our next event is set to be sometime in September and we will be focusing on delivering a funding masterclass to support charities, organisations and individuals looking to apply for grants to support the brilliant work they are doing for su***de prevention and mental wellbeing.
