Friends of Davyhulme Park

Friends of Davyhulme Park It was formed by 4 local mums who wanted to help improve their local park and at the same time make new friends and help promote a sense of community .

The Friends of Davyhulme Park (FODP) was formed in September 2009 and welcomes new members to help us in improving the park, planning activities and fundraising. We got together with the help of the Council (via the Parks and Development Officer) and Action for Sustainable Living (AFSL). Our main aims are to raise funds to improve the park through conservation, environmental and restoration projec

ts . To promote sport, health, recreational activities and therefore the wellbeing of local residents of all ages. We aim to involve local people by seeking out their views and holding regular meetings and events. Thank you to everyone who came to the meeting today - we really appreciate people giving up their free time.
We are hoping to get the gardening club up and running very soon, are looking at funding opportunities to make improvements to the park and also have a mini litter pick and pond clearing planned amongst other things. New volunteers and new enthusiasm are hopefully going to make for a very productive summer. Please keep coming back for updates.

Apologies for not having posted the invite for today's pond clearing - we are having serious gremlin issues. Still - all is not lost - one pond has been cleared of branches and rubbish - there's still chance to come and help with pond no.2 - keep checking back for the date....

We have had a couple of people contact us with concerns over the works being carried out at the park and the cutting back of shrubs and trees. We have the received an email from the council with the following explanation;
They will initially seem quite drastic as much of the surrounding laurels will be lowered to about 75 cm’s. The shrubs will grow back quite quickly and bush up for the summer. Really they should not have been allowed to get this tall and I suspect they were originally planted with other shrubs that they have shaded out over the years. We will be able to take stock and a future funding bid to add back some variety to the shrubs. We may get some complaints when the initial works are started but I expect the plants to vigorously flower next year and the whole area feel much more part of the park and safer for all users to enjoy.
The area of shrubs to be cut back has been extended and when initially finished will look quite drastic but will grow back quickly and open up the view into and out of the sunken ponds and gardens.
