Dear Kent Residents,

We would like to inform you about the presence of the Asian Hornet (Vespa velutina) in our region. This invasive species poses a potential threat to local wildlife, particularly honeybees, which are vital for pollination and agriculture. Asian Hornets are slightly smaller than native hornets and have distinctive yellow and black markings. Their nests are typically built in trees, and they can become more aggressive if disturbed.

What to Look Out For:

Asian Hornets are dark brown with yellow stripes on their abdomen and a yellow face.

They are generally active from late summer into autumn.

Nests are often found high in trees or bushes.

What to Do:

If you spot an Asian Hornet, do not approach the nest directly.

Report sightings immediately to the Kent Wildlife Trust or the Non-Native Species Secretariat. Provide the exact location to assist with safe removal.

Avoid disturbing or swatting at them, as this may provoke aggression.

Why It’s Important:
The Asian Hornet is known to attack honeybees and can significantly impact local pollination and biodiversity. Its spread poses a risk to both the environment and agriculture.

Please stay vigilant and report any sightings. Working together, we can help protect our local ecosystem from the spread of this invasive species.

Thank you for your cooperation!
