Closely following World Environment Day, today is World Oceans Day, created by the United Nations in 1992 to celebrate our shared oceans and raise awareness of why they play such a vital part in our lives and our ecosystems. Most of us in Croydon u3a don't have the sea on our doorsteps, but one of our members does - the one who lives in Anglesey, who sends us wonderful pictures from time to time. Here is Newborough Warren, with Eryri (Snowdonia) in the background.

Croydon u3a was one of the first (if not the very first) u3as to formulate a Commitment to the Environment document. You can see it here:https://www.croydonu3a.org.uk/imgs/croydon_u3a_commitment_to_the_environment_statement83138.pdf

If you were with Croydon u3a's FB page during the COVID pandemic, you may remember this post, one of many "installations" which appeared on Shirley (Addington) Hills.

We thought it a good week to remind all our members of the message, It doesn't only apply to Spaceship Earth - Spaceship Croydon u3a is a large spaceship (think Starship Enterprise if you were a Trekkie) and we need more crew. Don't think you have nothing to offer. Everyone has something, and helping run Croydon u3a is a good way to meet loads of people and develop new skills that you may never have dreamed you had. Give it a go. See any of the committee if you want to be "crew"

Last September, many of our members turned out to help advertise Croydon u3a at Selsdon Community Fair. We ran a Bottle Tombola, which attracted people to our stall, where they heard about all the wonderful advantages of being a member of our brilliant organisation! The stall proved to be one of the most popular, with people signing up there and then, while others took away our flyers and joined later.

We are doing it again this year - and we need your help!

Where? The field next to the entrance to Selsdon Woods, off Old Farleigh Road.
When? Sunday 6th September 12.00 - 4.00pm.

We need volunteers to come and assist at the stall. You don’t have to stay all the time - just offer what you are able to do! We will also need bottles of all kinds for the Tombola. Please bring these to the Monthly Meeting.

All offers of help to Jenny or Maggie Chan, Publicity Coordinator

Last week we had a most enjoyable visit to Parham House, built in 1557 and one of the country's finest examples of a traditional Elizabethan mansion. We were able to have a guided tour of the house before the public were admitted and see the collection of needlework, paintings and furniture. After seeing the house, we were able to visit the award-winning gardens. Here are some pictures from the day - thanks to Angie.
