Men’s Mental Health Month – Grief Doesn’t Have to Be Faced Alone

Bereavement is one of life’s most challenging experiences, and the impact on mental health can be significant. Research shows that up to 40% of grieving individuals meet the criteria for major depression just one month after a loss. While many people gradually adapt to their grief, around 10–15% experience Prolonged Grief Disorder, which can have a profound effect on sleep, daily life, relationships, and overall wellbeing.

For many men, talking about grief can feel difficult. There can be pressure to stay strong, keep busy, or carry on as normal. But reaching out for support can make a real difference.

At the Rowland Brothers Foundation, we provide a safe, welcoming space where men can connect with others who understand bereavement. Whether through our support groups, walk-and-talk sessions, or one-to-one conversations, you don’t have to navigate grief on your own.

Seeking support isn’t a sign of weakness—it’s a positive step towards healing, improving wellbeing, and reducing the risk of longer-term mental health difficulties.

Through the Rowland Brothers Foundation, that vision has become a thriving charity supporting over 100 people every week across Croydon who are navigating grief and bereavement.

Your compassion, dedication, and commitment to helping others have created a community where people find understanding, connection, and hope during some of life’s most difficult times.

From everyone at the Foundation, thank you for believing that bereaved people deserve ongoing support. Without you, we wouldn’t be here, and many of our clients would be facing their grief alone.

Despite a forecast of heavy rain, our Walk & Talk group enjoyed another fantastic walk this week – proving that whatever the weather, it’s always worth coming along!

As we explored the beautiful grounds around Keston, we discovered a fascinating piece of local history. We stopped at the bench and magnificent oak tree associated with William Pitt the Younger, Britain’s youngest Prime Minister. It was here at his Holwood estate that Pitt met with his friend and fellow campaigner William Wilberforce. Their discussions helped shape the movement that ultimately led to the abolition of the slave trade throughout the British Empire.

It was a reminder that even an ordinary walk can uncover extraordinary stories from our past.

The rain came and went, but so did the sunshine, and we were treated to some beautiful moments along the way. Fresh air, good company, local history, and a few unexpected sunny spells made for a wonderful afternoon.

Whatever the forecast says, come and join us. You never know what you’ll discover, who you’ll meet, or what stories might be waiting just around the corner.
