Drought well and truly evident this week and hoping for rain soon!

The heat, combined with holiday season meant a smaller team on site this week, so jobs included our regular tree watering scheme and giving the hall a deep clean and maintenance session ahead of this weekend’s events.

Busy week on site this week despite smaller teams due to holiday season.

It was a genuine pleasure to welcome Joanna Bennett from Little Learners Nursery back for a site visit and receive the generous donation of 2 x indoor axe throwing sets for our Beavers and younger visitors.

Elsewhere the team continued to use our new portable tree watering system to get much needed water to the new trees across the site, while indoors we completed the installation of the new integrated fire alarm system and replaced our Carbon Monoxide alarms.

We also conducted another site survey to enable us to prioritise the outdoor projects that will take us through September and into the autumn.

This produced a very welcome discovery, in a very healthy and previously unknown English Elm tree on the boundary of one of our neighbours properties.

Smaller team on site today and still too hot for some of our more strenuous outdoor projects.

Tasks today involved creating a new accessible PFD store for our buoyancy aids, sorting the rafting and pioneering kit ahead of this weekend’s camp, carpet and hard surface cleaning in the hall and facilitating a site tour for Councillor Gill Hickson and her party, as part of our community awareness programme.

Great to see our new guests from KX ESU- King's Cross Explorer Scout Unit using our new woodland camping areas and enjoying their day tomahawk throwing and raft building on the lake.

Wonderful group and their first time at Pinewood and am pretty confident that they’ll be back as they’re always welcome.

Another warm day on site with lots of different projects underway across the site with regular cleaning and rhodi management tasks being done alongside the launch of a new project to update the boat park and outdoor storage areas.

Elsewhere we continued to water our young trees with our container and barrow system, which also provides a great opportunity to monitor the butterflies, birds, dragonflies and how everything is responding to the continuing heatwave and drought.

Interestingly the Rowan trees are producing lots of berries early this year which should bring in lots of birdlife in coming months.

Croydon Scouts trying improvised raft building today.

Not only a great way to learn and practice pioneering skills, raft building is great for developing problem solving, team work and communication.

This week we’ve facilitated another four site visits from new groups and organisations looking to hire the site. Feedback has been really strong, with each visitor surprised and impressed by how much the site has been transformed and how good our facilities now are.

Progress also continues across the site with the team busy with regular jobs and also being able to complete tasks that have been on the “to-do” list for some time.

Jobs included cleaning the floors in the hall, tidying up the areas immediately outside the hall, managing new growth on the rhododendron and finally getting the accumulated rubbish removed from the building work.

We also launched our ‘heatwave response’ measures, where we are now able to ensure all of our new trees receive a weekly supply of fresh water to get us through this hot spell. It’s hard physical work but immensely satisfying knowing that we’re helping a new generation of indigenous broad leaf trees become established at Pinewood.

Very hot today, so team very busy on a diverse set of tasks on and off site.

Part of team spent the day in the shade in the woods and continued with rhododendron management while the rest of us joined some of the District Team to move equipment from another group and reclaim 3 x large double door storage cabinets for Pinewood.

But the highlight of the day was a trip out to meet Lucia Briault and collect an amazing donation of over 30 home grown indigenous trees.
