Pinewood Scout Centre Pinewood Scout Centre is a multi activity centre based in Croydon, Bromley, SE London borders It can be used for meetings, training events, overnight stays etc.

Pinewood Scout Centre is located in six acres of mixed woodland, close to the London Loop Footpath and accessed via Shirley Church Road. The Centre building comprises a large hall, two side rooms, toilets, showers and a fully equipped kitchen. The grounds can be used for outdoor activities, e.g. backwoods cooking and wide games. The Centre is available for hire to Scout and Guide Groups, school groups and youth organisations & for birthdays. Hire charges are scaled according to requirements - building and/or grounds - and hire duration - evening, day or weekend use. Although the site has no resident warden, it is cared for and maintained by a small group of dedicated volunteers. The low water conditions are frustrating as we can’t restart lake activities for some time but this lets us continue our lake maintenance work by removing another 100+ buckets of organic material from the lake bed that will be used for soil improvement and mulching our new tree project when they arrive in November.

Elsewhere the team were busy clearing fallen sweet chestnuts, cleaning the hall and starting to work on the new outside storage areas.

Smaller team on site today so we made use of the fantastic weather to continue with the cleanup of the lake.

Using an improvised bucket dredge system we’ve extracted around 6 cubic meters of well rotted organic material from the area near to the dam wall. This improves both the safety and usability of this section of the lake but the material, once dried, is going to be used for soil enrichment of the area to be planted with the 420 trees that arrive in November.

Our holistic approach is significantly improving the biodiversity of the site in terms of increased numbers of insects and bird life and this week we had our first confirmed sighting of a large grass snake by the lake, which is a huge environmental win for the team 🐍 👏👏👏

Another successful week on site despite the continued drought conditions impacting the lake.

However we’re always quick to seize an opportunity, so the low water has enabled us to start dredging out years of accumulated leaf matter that had built up on the lake bed. Starting at the dam, we’ve excavated over 4 cubic meters by hand and will continue again over coming weeks.

This not only improves the utility of the lake but provides excellent compost material that will go into improving the soil where our new trees will go in November.

Elsewhere we salvaged another load of quality roofing timbers that will be used in our new outdoor storage bunkers, saving us a lot of money on materials.

And today we took receipt of our first batch of the new Pinewood Camp Patch which will be available to visitors shortly.

Great to see our badgers back on site and active inside the hall compound 🦡

Our other wildlife highlight is the presence of an adolescent and adult Hobby in the area above the lake. This is a confirmed first for the site and hopefully an annual visitor.

Full team on site this week and everyone making the most of the cooler temperatures to get outside.

September marks the start of a major project that will see almost 500 trees being planted in November to establish a Miyawaki Forest area, replant areas where we have cleared Rhododendron and the creation of new seasonal wet ponds.

The work started this week with the planting area being marked out and soil starting to be aerated. To support this we’ve started manually dredging and bagging material from the drought hit lake that improves the lake bed but also gives us excellent organic material to enrich the where the new trees are going. This is a major 6 month effort that will see our volunteers and Community Payback project active every week.

Elsewhere we continue to manage the rhodi and in the hall the efforts were focused on repairing one of the toilets and cleaning.

Busy week again this week with some of the regular team still away.

We’re glad to be joined today by a number of Explorers who have asked if Pinewood can assist them complete their Activity Centre Service Badge.

This compliments other Explorers who have been helping out over the summer with general volunteering tasks around the site and which today saw us start to denail and process recently salvaged timber that is to be used in coming construction jobs.

This enabled us to build a new lake maintenance raft that will be used shortly to help dredge areas of the lake bed while water levels are low.

Elsewhere we have been busy cleaning the hall areas ahead this weekend’s visitors and general tidying up across the site.

Drought well and truly evident this week and hoping for rain soon!

The heat, combined with holiday season meant a smaller team on site this week, so jobs included our regular tree watering scheme and giving the hall a deep clean and maintenance session ahead of this weekend’s events.
