Lots again achieved this week with grass cutting and woodland work yesterday before rain forced us indoors today.

In the woods we’ve continued to develop our new levelled areas to create camping pitches amongst the trees. This is a major step forward towards our plans to make Pinewood a unique venue for camps and activities.

Elsewhere we’ve removed a large fallen birch tree that was blocking the track to the lake and continued with our rhododendron management tasks.

Today in the hall we used the opportunity to stay dry and gave the hall carpet a shampoo and clean, while the rest of the team cleared the chair and table store as part of the final jobs linked to the bunk room build.

Smaller team on site today dodging showers but still getting lots done across the site. ⛈️

Today saw us continue to manage invasive Black Cherry Laurel, clear all the gutters on the hall, give the hall carpet and kitchen a needed deep clean ahead of this weekend’s visitors and hold a planning meeting on jobs for coming weeks.

Full team on site today so lots more progress across different projects.

Focus today was on getting the grass cut in other areas of the site and getting the ranges and lake side areas ready for the group activities scheduled for coming days.

Elsewhere we continued with upgrades to our external electrics, fitted fireproof boarding to one of the internal rooms, completed a full scale crockery and kitchen audit, continued with our rhododendron management and removal of an area of black cherry laurel and finished construction of our new three bay compost area.

Another great week of progress on projects across the site, with the team busy levelling and repairing parts of the entrance track, cutting the grass around the hall, building new compost bays and improving the dead hedging in vulnerable parts of our boundary and the start of a new exciting project to create new levelled off pitches within the woods suitable for camping.

Our dead hedges are built up from large amounts of the cleared rhododendron and enable us to create skeleton structures that can become habitat for birds etc while helping secure our boundary in a way that let’s wildlife pass through, keeps our guests in and trespassers out, without having to resort to wire or non natural fencing.

This approach has been very successful with our original areas now being adopted by brambles, ivy and vines which tie the structures together and continuously improve our wildlife habitat, which is reflected in the noticeable increases in insect and bird life currently being seen across the site.

Things really getting going on site this week with major projects coming to finalisation and new ones starting off to move us into our next phase of our five year transformation plan.

This week saw the start of the creation of new levelled areas within the woods that will be suitable for tent pitches and significantly improve options for those wanting a wild camping experience while still having the luxury of the hall facilities near by.

Elsewhere we continued to improve our facilities with further upgrades to our electrical systems, completion of the final bunk room, installation of new improvised barrier gates for the trailer garage and general cleaning to get everything ready for this weekend’s camp.

In addition we were really happy to facilitate a site visit from representatives from the Addington Valley Academy and explore how we can support their DoE programme and potentially use Pinewood to enrich learning for their students and staff.

Things really gathering pace now as we approach the final stages of our major winter projects.

This week we were working on levelling areas of the entrance track, clearing a large area of rhododendron and finally got the grass cut around the hall.

One the projects front we pressure washed the new paving on the archery range, so barring some cosmetic work this project is now finished and indoors, we were fixing door furniture and closers to the fire doors in the new bunk rooms and fitting electrics to support the new fire alarm panel that will finalise that project.

Away from the tasks and jobs we also take time to observe all our wonderful wildlife and plants that are thriving in the woods as a result of clearing the rhododendron.

With over 20 different bird species easily seen and heard and regular sightings of deer, fox and signs of badger, Pinewood continues to be an amazing wildlife habitat while still providing high quality activities and camp options.

Really impressed with the efforts of the team this week as real progress made across lots of different projects and of specific note is the fantastic contribution that is now being made by members of the District Network Group. 🙏

Network if for young adults aged from 18 - 25 who want to continue their participation with Scouts after Explorers and Pinewood is more than happy to welcome them as volunteers and provide opportunities to learn new skills and gain valuable experience as part of their projects and personal development.

Our Community Payback project finished laying the paving on the archery range on Wednesday, so we’ll tidy things up next week and get it ready for our group session the following weekend.

Elsewhere in the grounds the team were busy with the never ending task of managing the rhododendron and around the hall, finally cleared the last of the building rubbish ready for collection and continued to work on our new storage facilities.

Indoors, we hung the doors to the new bunk rooms and constructed the last of beds, so we can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel on this project. This milestone completely transforms Pinewood through the introduction of year round indoor accommodation and huge thanks to everyone from 17-82 who have contributed to making this dream become a reality.

The team have once again been very busy this week on a diverse range of projects across the site.

Unfortunately the lawnmower decided that it didn’t want to come out of hibernation and threw a con-rod out through the side of the engine housing, so we’re now on the search for a replacement petrol mower if anyone knows of one going spare 🙏 (pic1)

Our resident Community Payback project assisted us yesterday by relocating a lot of building materials from it’s temporary store to a longer term solution, moving all of the pioneering spars to new covered area and continuing with paving the archery range.

This allowed the team today to continue to reconfigure our outdoor storage areas, process more birch logs, clean the hall ahead of this weekend’s booking, clear another area of rhododendron and inspect / service our tool store and brush cutter.

The highlight of the day was being able to provide a site tour to a young man who’s due to move up to our District Network group and who’s interested in volunteering with us on a Thursday.
