Friends of Shirley Windmill

Friends of Shirley Windmill The Friends of Shirley Windmill manage and open Shirley Windmill to the public on certain days of the year. Well worth a visit!

The Shirley Windmill is now owned by Croydon Council but is run and managed by The Friends of Shirley Windmill who open the mill to the public on certain days each year. The open days will be displayed prominently on this page so 'like' the page if you want to receive notification and visit the mill. This tower mill at Shirley was built in 1854 by a Richard Alwen to replace an earlier post mill, b

uilt by his grandfather that burned down in the same year. The mill has undergone extensive restoration and is 'almost' in working order, although there are no plans at present of ever having the mill running. It has a very interesting history, some fairly unusual features and interactive models to aid the visitors understanding about what it would have been like for the miller running the mill. If you visit the mill you will find the guides a relaxed and friendly bunch of people, one of whom will show you around the mill, free of charge, and as it is not a working mill you will get to go right to the top of the mill and gradually work your way down, learning what happened on each floor. Further information can be found on the Shirley Windmill web site and we look forward to seeing you there on one of our open days.
