Amnesty UK welcomes the judge's ruling that the ‘Barclays 5’ will not be sentenced as terrorists. The ‘Barclays 5’ were responsible for the direct action against Barclays bank in Burnley in August 2024.

No one should be treated more harshly under the law because their crimes were part of a protest against genocide or any other human rights abuses, and the misuse of terrorism powers in this way should never have even been considered.

We now need to see the proscription of Palestine Action as a terrorist organisation lifted and an end to the misuse of sweeping counter-terror powers against direct action protestors

The Government should begin the process of reversing the years of attacks on our right to demonstrate, one of the most effective tools we have to hold our leaders to account.

From 1 September to 1 October, visit SURVIVING EVIN, a powerful exhibition by Amnesty International and Anoosheh Ashoori exploring Anoosheh’s experience of imprisonment in Iran's Evin Prison.
Held at the Croydon Clocktower Café, the exhibition features photographs from inside Evin and of personal items Anoosheh made during his time there, plus moving accounts that recreate his journey from arrest and solitary confinement to release and recovery.
Join us for the official opening on 5 September at 11am, when the Civic Mayor will open the exhibition and Anoosheh Ashoori will share his story. See less

Lebanon’s decision to abolish the death penalty marks a major milestone and a victory for human rights in the country. Justice must be rooted in human rights, not in an irreversible and cruel punishment. After more than two decades without executions, today’s step transforms a precarious hiatus in executions into lasting legal protection upholding the right to life and bringing Lebanon in line with the global trend towards abolition.

The passing of this law is testament to the decades of tireless advocacy by Lebanese human rights defenders and organizations, as well as the leadership of key officials who recognized the death penalty as a cruel and inhuman punishment, often imposed after unfair proceedings and the burden of which frequently falls on those at most disadvantage.
