Friday's office with Toms' awesome Splitty.

I did an engine service a few weeks back and found the weber icts to be massively overfuelling. I took them away for a rebuild and discovered:

*Both floats weighing over 17g (should be 11g)
*Carbs no where near balanced
*Needle valves worn out
*All jetting wrong
*No manifold balance pipe
*No oil breather connected to airfilter

The above was caused by not running a fuel pressure regulator or heat spacer gaskets between the carbs and manifolds.

The carbs were deep cleaned, rejetted to engine spec with jetting kit , new floats set to correct height, viton tipped needle valves added, airfilter tapped for oil breather, manifolds tapped for balance pipe, heat spacers added and fuel pressure setup with a regulator at 2.1psi.

Once the mixture was set and carbs were balanced it ran like a dream!

A lovely addition was the engine lid as the old broken hinge kept on giving way and banging me in the head 😁

What a crazy few weeks, this is just the tip of the iceberg of what I remembered to take photos of!

1. A lovely early bay for a mobile engine service and some fault finding upnin Uttoxeter. The owners run an awesome club called , you definitely need to check them out!

2. Replacing rear handbrake cables is a sync on Aircooled T25's, the rear brake hubs are a 5 min job to remove. The front handbrake cable is however a complete pig and requires the fuel tank to be dropped.

3. A naughty inlet leak on some dry cracked manifold boots.

4. Broken Type 4 clutch friction plate.

5. Overheated and pitted clutch flywheel.

6. Weepy Type 4 oil pressure switch, so much better to replace than the suspected oil cooler leak!

7. Wrong throttle pedals, early and late, not interchangeable

8. Mobile outside in the snow πŸ₯Ά

So, 700 miles down, any issues?

Well just one, my indicator relay packed up. It was wet, which means I was overzealous with the jet wash before we left πŸ€ͺ. Old style door and window seals weren't designed to stop high-pressure water! I managed to remove it and clean it up so it 1/2 worked for the way home. Often when they fail the indicator light stays on without the tick so I just had pretend to be a relay on the way home.

I also tightened the fan belt as they always stretch after 100 miles or so from new.

No oil used, no oil leaks and an average of 23mpg. Fully loaded with towbar storage box, not bad πŸ€™

Cruising at 70mph 210-220f oil temp, 300-350f cylinder head temp and 145-150f block temp from distributor.

Back to playing with other people's VW'S the week πŸ˜πŸ€™

We had a cheeky campout with our good friends Alan, Claire, doggo Lola and campervan Gloria. We all love this area so much and had to make it happen that we were here at the same time!

Two early bays, dinner in and coffee brewed outside in the morning, it doesn't get any better πŸ€™

I often get asked if I prepare, fix, or check anything before a Roadtrip.

The answer is YES, maintainance is key for a happy camper. I ideally want no issues on my trip so I can spend time with my family and not under a campervan like most days! I've learnt to embrace niggles and breakdowns but it's not so easy these days with a 4 year old and black lab!

So what did I do to prepare this time?

Full Engine Service and tune:
*VR1 Oil
*Bosch filter for full flow system
*Strainer for deep sump
*NGK plugs
*Check twin DRLA 40 carb operation and inspect for interal leaks. Required 1 x acceleration pump jet clean out. Check carb sync and mixture adjustment.
*Gap valves, no adjustment needed on the porsche adjusters now for over 10,000 miles now.
*Air filters clean and re-oil
*New fanbelt
*Bosch cap and rotor
*Check fuel lines and change fuel filter
*Clean and test solar panel system and batteries.
*Clean and test tow bar electrics
*Test All lights
*Re-fit rebuilt steering box from the awesome Neil (had a shocking rebuild previously elsewhere).
*Grease beam
*Replace section of exhaust that split at the weld
*Fit wide angle side mirror
*Check tyre pressures, tyre condition, and bearing play
*Check and adjust brakes. Found rear wheel cylinder and flexi line needed replacing. This meant hub nut and drum off and new split pin.
*Bleed brakes and renew fluid
*Check Gas and propex
*Top up window washer and check operation
*Fix throttle cable
*Clean fuses
*Change leisure system fuses for better type.
*Install 123 app on secondary phone to have as permanent fixture on dash.
*Deep clean inside and out
*Sort / clean / Check all camping gear.

Hugh brought his bus to me for a full engine service and to check out a hesitation issue.

The throttle cable wasn't making full throttle or return so it wasn't possible to unleash the full power of the 1776.

1776 Type 1
Twin Weber icts
Remote oil cooler
High ratio gearbox

Sustained 70mph even up hill with a max of 95c/200f on a hit sunny day

How the week started, with Louise's lovely beetle.

Sadly it recently suffered an engine fire and despite being "repaired" it was still not running well. Multiple issues were found causing running issues, the carb was not put back together properly and was running very lean, manifold boots split and leaking and fuel line wrong size and still a fire hazard πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ

Use ethanol rated 5.6mm fuel hose and 11-13mm hose clips. 6mm and 1/4" hose along with jubiliee clips will cause you problems πŸ”₯

Now running much better and booked in for additional repairs to keep it safe and ready for new adventures πŸ€™

Dynamo in a day 😁. My buddy Alan came to see me today and we swapped out the dynamo that had slowly been dying for a while. Early bay means easypeasy swap over with no need to drop the engine.

This weekends Aircooled Teaching Workshop with Nathan and his lovely 73 beetle. Last of the flatscreens!

Once owned by his wife and then sold, it came back to them many years later after Nathan tracked it down and bought it for his wife's birthday, what a legend!

Running stock 1600 twin port, we went through how to service and tune it and how to overcome those pesky breakdowns!
