The Dunn Terrace multi use games area (MUGA) officially reopens next week!

Thanks to Unlocking Social Value funding we have been able to transform the area into a safe and welcoming space for sports activities.

On Wednesday 9 September between 3:30-5:00pm we will be celebrating the new space with a range of activities, games and prizes, along with a basketball session led by the Newcastle Eagles Foundation.

Residents from across the estate are welcome to attend but please note children under 11 must be accompanied by an adult.

Our office located on Raby Cross will be closed on Friday 4 September from 11am to carry out essential maintenance work to the shutters.

We anticipate the work will complete at around 2pm.

The Thriving Byker Strategy (TBS) is a celebration of the Byker Estate, and all the work that contributes to making our community so brilliant.

The annual document explores nine key themes including:

🔵Pride and Ownership
🔵Health, wellbeing mindfulness
🔵Income maximisation
🔵A cleaner, greener Byker
🔵A safe place to live
🔵Children and young people
🔵Extending our reach
🔵Community training and employment
🔵Digital connectivity

Helping our customers reach their employment goals is a top priority for us. We have a dedicated Employment Advisor Sean who works alongside our community partners to ensure we offer a wide range of support services to ensure people can live happily and independently in their homes.

During 2025/2026:

✅26 customers moved into employment

✅4 Byker customers have been recruited into grounds maintenance New Start roles

✅63 active customers engaged with the service from referrals from Neighbourhood Housing Officers or self-referrals

✅24 customers have been guided into training or improvement of basic skills

✅79% conversion rate (from not engaging to engaging)

We’ve also worked to provide a range of courses and learning opportunities for customers both internally and by collaborating with external organisations.

It's great to see the Byker Wall community utilising the communal bin areas around the estate. However, we're seeing a lot of rubbish being fly tipped around the bins.

If you leave your rubbish around the bins, this is fly tipping, which is illegal, and you will be fined if you are caught.

If you are unsure what communal bins you should be using, please contact your Housing Officer. Homes with wheelie bins should not use the communal bins.

If your items are too big to throw away as general waste (like the office chair) please dispose of them responsibly at the recycling centre or arrange a collection through Newcastle City Council. Connect25 food bank and KC Foundation are running a family fun day on 29 August from 12pm in Lower Harbottle Park.

There will be lots of activities on offer including a bouncy castle. 🌞

Below are just some of the items dumped around the estate and wall that our team have had to collect over the past couple of weeks.

We are constantly monitoring CCTV to try and identify those who are responsible for fly tipping. Recently we were successful in identifying a customer who chose to dump waste on the estate.

This incident then went through the court system where the customer had to pay a fine and costs totalling £331.

Please help us keep the estate tidy by disposing of your waste appropriately. Newcastle City Council offer bulky waste collection and the Byker Recycling Centre is just a couple of minutes' drive from the estate with no appointment needed. As your housing provider, it is very important that you as customers have a voice and influence over the service we provide.

In Byker there are plenty of ways for you to get involved and shape the services we provide to you, and as part of this, we're starting a new residents forum, the Byker Resident's Forum (BRF).

The purpose of the BRF is to increase involvement from you as customers living in the Byker Estate and provide a platform for you to share your voice to help improve the services you receive from Karbon Homes.

The forum will consist of Byker Estate customers who will meet with Karbon representatives every quarter, starting in January 2027. The forum will allow the opportunity for customers to:

-Share feedback, ideas and local insight about homes, services and the wider estate.

-Identify themes, priorities and emerging issues so they can be considered by BCT and Karbon Homes.

-Be part of an inclusive involvement, ensuring a range of customer voices are heard.

-Support community cohesion by sharing information, celebrating positive activity, and connecting customers to opportunities.

-Improve transparency by reporting back on actions taken and progress made.

-Identify opportunities for collaborative working with Newcastle City Council (via the Newcastle Strategic Forum), Strategic and Community Partners to benefit the wider community.
