🌿✨ Nature’s Tiny Marvels in the Sperrins ✨🌿
Next time you’re exploring the trails of the peatlands of the Sperrins or An Creagán reserve, keep an eye out for some of the most fascinating — and magical — lichens that thrive here! 👀🍂
🍃 Reindeer Lichen (Cladonia rangiferina)
Irish: Liathán na Rainneaírí – “lichen of the reindeer”
Also known as: Reindeer Moss (though it’s not a moss at all!)
💡Did you know this lichen is a vital winter food for reindeer and caribou in the Arctic — and here in Ireland, it carpets upland heaths in silvery-green mats.
🍄 Cup Lichen (Cladonia fimbriata, Cladonia pyxidata)
Irish: Cupan Sí – “fairy’s little cup”
Also known as: Pixie Cups or Fairy Cups
💡 Fun fact: Folklore says fairies used these tiny goblets to collect morning dew for their potions. Look closely in mossy woodland and you might just spot them! ✨
🌬️ Lichens in General (Liathán – “little grey one”):
They’re a unique partnership between a fungus and an alga, thriving where few others can.
💡 Fun fact: Lichens are so sensitive to air quality that they’re called “nature’s air monitors.”
