🌿✨ Nature’s Tiny Marvels in the Sperrins ✨🌿

Next time you’re exploring the trails of the peatlands of the Sperrins or An Creagán reserve, keep an eye out for some of the most fascinating — and magical — lichens that thrive here! 👀🍂

🍃 Reindeer Lichen (Cladonia rangiferina)
Irish: Liathán na Rainneaírí – “lichen of the reindeer”
Also known as: Reindeer Moss (though it’s not a moss at all!)
💡Did you know this lichen is a vital winter food for reindeer and caribou in the Arctic — and here in Ireland, it carpets upland heaths in silvery-green mats.

🍄 Cup Lichen (Cladonia fimbriata, Cladonia pyxidata)
Irish: Cupan Sí – “fairy’s little cup”
Also known as: Pixie Cups or Fairy Cups
💡 Fun fact: Folklore says fairies used these tiny goblets to collect morning dew for their potions. Look closely in mossy woodland and you might just spot them! ✨
🌬️ Lichens in General (Liathán – “little grey one”):
They’re a unique partnership between a fungus and an alga, thriving where few others can.

💡 Fun fact: Lichens are so sensitive to air quality that they’re called “nature’s air monitors.”

🦊 Fox Moth Caterpillar
With its black body and bright orange hairs, this furry crawler loves basking in the sun.

✨ Fun fact: Adult Fox Moths don’t eat – they live entirely on the energy stored as caterpillars!

The Irish Elk has arrived at An Creagán!

Once roaming the Irish landscape over 10,000 years ago, this giant of the Ice Age stood up to 2 metres tall at the shoulder, with antlers spanning over 3.5 metres! Fossils have been found across Ireland, telling the story of one of the most impressive mammals to ever live here.

🌍🌿 World Bog Day - July 27th 🌿🌍

Today, we celebrate the vital role of bogs in protecting our planet and our health. 🦋

🪶 Biodiversity: Bogs like the ones in the Sperrins, Tyrone, are rich in rare species like curlew and red grouse, helping protect nature's fragile balance.

🌱 Climate Action: Peatlands store carbon and combat climate change. Restoring them helps keep our planet cooler for future generations.

💧 Flood Protection: Bogs absorb water like natural sponges, reducing flood risks and protecting communities.

🧘‍♀️ Mental Health: Spending time in nature, especially in peaceful bogs, is proven to reduce stress and boost well-being.

Let's protect our bogs for a safe, sustainable future! 🌏💚

Bog Asphodel – Sciollam na Móna, Jewel of the Irish Bogs!

Now blooming across Irish peatlands, Bog Asphodel (Narthecium ossifragum / Sciollam na Móna) adds a golden glow to our blanket and raised bogs in The Sperrins — a beautiful indicator of a healthy bog ecosystem.

Its Latin name ossifragum means "bone-breaker", based on a long-standing (but false) belief that it caused brittle bones in livestock. The real issue was phosphorus deficiency in plants growing on poor soils. However, in large amounts, it can be toxic to animals, causing photosensitisation — a reaction to sunlight after ingestion. 🐑

Let’s celebrate this striking native wildflower while protecting the precious Irish bogs it calls home. 💚

🦋🪲🐛 Minibeast Day 🐛🪲🦋

Last week I had a lovely P3 class from St Teresa’s Primary School Loughmacrory for a Minibeast themed day, aligning with their current topic 🕷️

We started with a presentation all about different types of invertebrates, anatomy, life cycles, habitats and their ecological importance. The pupils were super knowledgeable and were even teaching me things I didn’t know! 🐞

We then explored the bog, doing some sweep netting to find spiders, caterpillars, ants, and heather beetles🐝 we also saw some lovely orange tip and peacock butterflies fluttering around. Also, a little common lizard made a fleeting appearance (which I unfortunately missed) 🦎

We then did some pond dipping to see the difference in freshwater vs terrestrial invertebrates, we found lots of water boatmen, whirligigs, and some dragonfly larvae 🪱

We ended with some play and a forest walk! It was a gorgeous sunny day ☀️

🍄‍🟫🪵 Heath Waxcap 🪵🍄‍🟫

Found this little guy on my bog walk today. I am no mushroom expert but I think it might be Heath Waxcap (Gliophorus laetus)
Their habitat includes grassland, heath and mosses 🌱
Its genus name “Gliophorus” comes from the Greek glia - meaning “glue” and Latin phorus - meaning “bearing”, referring the glue-like liquid that coats their caps and gills.
While the epithet “laetus” means joyful 😁 how cute!

Any fungi experts please feel free to correct me, I did my best with identifying it! 🍄‍🟫
