Chagos Islanders Movement

Chagos Islanders Movement Welcome to Chagos Islanders Movement! Since 2015, we've raised awareness and advocated for Chagossian in the UK and MU.

From protests to Downing Streets, ICJ, we demand justice. Join our journey of resilience and hope. Welcome to the Chagos Islanders Movement, where resilience, unity, and the pursuit of justice drive our community. Since 2015, we've stood as a beacon of hope, fighting against forced eviction and exile imposed by the British and US governments. More than volunteers, we're a fam

ily bound by shared struggle and the dream of returning home. From the UK, we ensure every Chagossian integrates fully while awaiting our rightful return. Our mission: demand accountability and support from the UK Government. We advocate for comprehensive packages and collaborative projects to uplift our community while in England. We call for a dedicated Chagossian desk within the FCDO, rehousing for those who have been here since 2002 as well as newcomers, and recognition from local authorities. We challenge misconceptions, confront ignorance, and stand tall for justice. Join us in reclaiming what's rightfully ours. Together, we are the Chagossian, united in strength, solidarity, and unwavering hope.

As we find ourselves in England, it's imperative to recognise that the British Government holds a fundamental duty of care towards us, not solely because we are British citizens, but also due to the profound favour and sacrifice made by our ancestors in safeguarding the world. Despite our forced displacement, the Chagossian community has remained steadfast in our activism for rights and justice since their force exiled. From challenging immigration bills to present-day advocacy efforts, we've consistently fought for our voices to be heard and our rights to be respected. Our demand is simple yet crucial: to be treated with the dignity and respect that every human deserves. As we persevere in our struggle for justice and the eventual restoration of our homeland, we stand united as the Chagossian community, embodying strength, solidarity, and unwavering hope in the face of adversity. 🌟

🌹🌹🌹 Today, We Say Our Goodbyes to Mrs. Lucette Martin 🌹🌹🌹
This evening, Tuesday 9th September 2025, we gather at Broadfield Social Hall Community Centre to pay our respects to our dearly loved Mrs. Lucette Martin.
Lucette’s coffin will be exposed for viewing from 7:30pm to 8:30pm, offering us a moment to honour her life before she makes her final journey to Mauritius tonight.
Lucette’s voice, her warm smile, and her boundless kindness will remain with us always. Though she is no longer with us in body, her presence will continue to live in our memories, our stories, and in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
Let us come together this evening to celebrate a life so beautifully lived.
Rest in peace, our dear Lucette. You will never be forgotten.

🌹🌹In Loving Memory of Mrs Lucette Martin🌹🌹
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Mrs. Lucette Martin, one of the co-founders of the Chagos Islanders Movement and the Chagossian Elderly Group.
Mrs. Martin was a generous, lovable, and kind-hearted soul who gave so much of herself to the Chagossian community here in England. She dedicated her time to helping others without ever expecting anything in return. Her compassion, humility, and unwavering strength touched the lives of many, and she leaves behind a legacy of love and service.

She was an inspiration to us younger generations, reminding us through her words and actions that the struggle for justice and dignity must continue. Mrs. Martin stood proudly at the heart of our movement, taking part in hundreds of protests across the UK and the Hague, always raising her voice for the rights of her people. Though she longed to make one last visit to her island home, that wish remained unfulfilled.

Her spirit, courage, and devotion will live on in all of us.

May her pure soul rest in peace, and may we honour her memory by continuing the fight she so passionately believed in.

"The Chagos Islanders Movement is not a political organisation. We remain committed to engaging with both the UK and Mauritian governments; not to take sides, but to represent the rights and dignity of Chagossians. Our presence at the table is to ensure that our people’s voices are heard and our legacy, heritage, and lineage are protected through peaceful dialogue and mutual respect."

To all my fellow Chagossians,

Since 2002, apart from receiving British passports, what have we truly been given?
No proper housing. No real support system. Families have been separated.
Yet we have worked hard, contributed to British society, and paid our taxes like every other citizen.

At the same time, our homeland was rented out to others without our consent and without any benefit to our people.
We have asked the British Government to support us, to involve us in decisions about our future. But we were ignored, told we had no authority because we are not a government.

Let me make this clear: we are not here to take sides.
Yes, many Chagossians feel closer to Britain and have placed their hopes in the UK.
But we must also recognise that the British Government played a major role in our suffering.

It is a political game and this is why we have never shown preference to either the British or the Mauritian government because both have a responsibility for what happened to us.

We also understand that many Chagossians do not feel represented by Mauritius, and we respect that.
But the reality is that the law now favours Mauritius, and the financial resources are going in that direction.

So, if some Chagossians choose not to engage with the Mauritian government, that is their right.
But for those who want to make sure we are not left behind; we are ready to speak up.
We are prepared to take part in future discussions to ensure our people finally receive what they have been waiting for: justice, recognition, and reparations.

We will not wait another 99 years.
Some may stay silent, and some may disapprove but others are ready to stand up.
And I speak on behalf of those who want to be included when the time comes before it’s too late.

The land may be in the hands of governments, but the soul of the Chagos Islands belongs to us, the Chagossian people.
Let us be treated fairly and rightfully, as we deserve.

And we will no longer accept being pushed aside.
