Utterly despicable and I am extremely glad these two (now former) Suss*x Police Officers have been sacked for using obviously excessive force, pepper spray and a taster, against an elderly man in a wheelchair, in a dementia care home, who "posed no threat".

The independent disciplinary panel at Suss*x Police headquarters in Lewes ruled that the officers used "unjustified and excessive use of force" against 92-year-old Donald Burgess, a wheelchair-using amputee with dementia.

Case Details

• The Incident: In June 2022, the officers were called to the Park Beck care home in St Leonards-on-Sea after Mr Burgess threatened staff with a dinner knife. Within 90 seconds of entering his bedroom, PC Smith pepper-sprayed him and struck his arm with a baton, and PC Comotto discharged her Taser.

• Misconduct Findings: The panel found both officers breached professional standards regarding authority, respect, courtesy, and use of force. They failed to attempt meaningful de-escalation or properly consider the resident's vulnerability.

• Social Media Post: PC Comotto was additionally found to have made "inappropriate and unprofessional" comments on Facebook making light of the Taser deployment.

• Outcome: Both officers were dismissed without notice and added to the College of Policing's Barred List, preventing them from working in policing again.

Two Suss*x Police officers have been dismissed without notice for using excessive force against an elderly, disabled care-home resident.
