Gatwick Greenspace Partnership We work across some 200 square kilometres of countryside, in the adjacent towns of Reigate, Dorking, Horley, Crawley & Horsham

The Wildlife Trusts in both Sussex and Surrey are trying to deliver a landscape-scale network of wildlife habitat that would ensure long term ecological functioning. Gatwick Greenspace Partnership is one of those Living Landscape projects. We work across some 200 square kilometres of countryside, with a total human population of some 200,000 people, in the adjacent towns of Reigate, Dorking and Horley, in Surrey and Crawley and Horsham in Sussex, with Gatwick Airport in the middle.

We couldn't do our jobs without our fantastic volunteers! And this week we are celebrating National Volunteers' Week with the launch of a new opportunity on Tuesday mornings once a month.

Yesterday after weeks of warm, dry weather, things were a bit damper for our first ever Tuesday session at Owlbeech Woods in but luckily we largely dodged the showers!
These people were all completely new to volunteering and it was a pleasure to work with such a lovely group who were keen to learn more about the site and the wildlife that lives here and it was also good to hear about the wildlife that they have in their gardens at home as well.
This first session started off with some gentle Bracken clearance in one of the Heathland compartments and it was great to see how the young Heather plants are starting to spread in this area as a result of several years of similar Bracken clearance.Well done gang!

If you'd like to try volunteering, join us for the next session on the 7th July at Warnham Nature Reserve follow the link below to book:

Things have been hotting up! So Rangers are really happy we previously mulched the vegetable patch with leaf mould which helps keep the moisture in the soil! also discovered this mountain of "black gold", a heap of decaying leaves, which is an invaluable, free resource that dramatically improves soil structure, aeration, and water retention. Our project officer Barry was super busy in May leading two seed bomb workshops at STEM events. One at London Gatwick for Staff and one in the memorial gardens in for local families.
He engaged with over 50 people at the Gatwick event supported by Darcey Haldar and well over 150 people at STEM in the Park supported by Jane Wigan. We made hundreds of seed bombs with dozens of families. Highlighting the importance of wildflowers and wildlife gardening supporting our pollinators and encouraging everyone to do something for nature. While also discussing our career pathways and trying to encourage youngsters into careers supporting wildlife.

More improvements to the access at Owlbeech & Leechpool Woods in
The popularity of these woods for walking and running means that the main paths get a lot of wear and tear each year and this can be increased as new paths are created when people go off the beaten track to avoid the muddy spots and so it is important to regularly maintain the paths so that they are usable year round…well done by our mid week

Slow start to ? Why not join a snail race? Tots have been learning about slugs and snails who play an important part as Nature's clean up crew as well as providing important food sources for other wildlife. Slugs of many shapes, colours and sizes were at a clear advantage speeding to the finish line ahead of those carrying houses on their backs! Sussex Wildlife Trust Tilgate Park

Waste not want not! are the latest group to be wowed by the wonders of . This time we embarked on making a Willow arch. Trimmings cut from the hedge earlier in the year have been sprouting in a trough of water and have been well used by many GGP groups in the last few months. So many benefits: including biodiversity support, medicinal properties, erosion control, natural rooting hormones, not to mention the crafting possibilities! Sussex Wildlife Trust Tilgate Park

Fancy volunteering and taking action for wildlife?
We are holding a Bracken bashing session at Woods near on Tuesday 2nd June for new volunteers and if you would like to help us out, we would love to hear from you.
After this there will be further opportunities to carry out other practical volunteering tasks on the first Tuesday of each month on a variety of green spaces across our project area.
Bracken is a type of fern that can colonize open ground and as a result, it can soon out-compete other smaller, slow growing plants which results in a monoculture of Bracken with very little else growing underneath.
Therefore, one of the ways to reduce the spread of Bracken is to manually cut or break the Bracken stems at suitable times of the year…and this is where we come in! Why not join us during week? Book here:
