📚 Factual Friday

Did you know...

Menopause isn't just about hot flushes.

Hormones affect receptors throughout the body, which is why symptoms can be so varied.

Joint pain.
Anxiety.
Palpitations.
Brain fog.
Sleep changes.
Urinary symptoms.
Dry eyes.
Digestive changes.

The list goes on.

Every woman experiences menopause differently, which is why comparing yourself to someone else's journey rarely helps.

Your experience is valid.

Learning what's happening inside your body is often the first step towards finding the support that's right for you.

Knowledge is empowering. What would you like to understand better about perimenopause or menopause? Let us know and we will include it in future posts.

An update on yesterdays visit to Healthwatch Coventry drop in session at Whoberley Primary School.

We went in with copies of the free text part of the experience surveys - the part where women shared with us their personal experience, in their own words.

We explained our mission and were listened to with compassion and curiosity.

In particular it was great to speak with Samatha & Ruth from HW, who kindly offered to both attend our next in person community event and also signpost people to the project who may need our support. Also, Rizzy who helped with other community contacts that may benefit from knowing about our purpose.

It was also great to catch up with Taiwo Owatemi following our last meeting - who has started bringing the points we raised to health leaders. No updates yet but we will keep you posted.

And finally counsellor Julie Jones - who was interested to hear about the work we are doing and surprised about the lack of provision in Coventry, ironically, she has a family member who is a GP doing great work for gynae care by the sounds of it - unfortunately not in the midlands.

Engaging in community events like this is a great opportunity to showcase the struggles women are having day to day with accessing the right menopause care on the ground - and we were proud to represent your voices.

If you would be interested in attending these kind of events with us in the future we are looking to set up a steering group - please drop us a DM and let us know you're interested and we will contact you to arrange it.

For anyone who hasn't already and would like to share your experience you can do so here

🌿 Wellbeing Wednesday

This week, over in SHE Social, I've (Serena) been reflecting on something I think many women struggle with...

Is it selfish to want time alone?

After a very spontaneous weekend away in Dorset with my family, (and a rather unfortunate tummy bug that turned our 2 night camping trip into a 7 day trip! 🤦🏼‍♀️😂), I came home feeling something I wasn't expecting.

Grateful, yet OVERWHELMED 😵‍💫

Grateful for time away as a family, great weather and forced downtime... but overwhelmed with all being together in a small space for a long time.

As women, we often feel guilty for wanting time to ourselves. We tell ourselves we should always be available, always giving, always doing.

But what if wanting a little solitude isn't selfish at all?

If this resonates with you, come and join the conversation over in SHE Social. It's becoming such a lovely space for honest conversations, shared experiences and support from women who just get it. We'd love to welcome you. 🩵

Could shame be the reason? - a personal reflection

A question I drive myself crazy with on a daily basis is this;

Given what we now know about the physical, mental and emotional effects of declining hormones in Perimenopause, and the long term health risks of not having adequate replacement - why are so many women still reluctant to try natural hormone replacement therapy?

Why, instead of being proactive do we wait until symptoms are so debilitating it starts to have a detrimental effects on our career, relationships and day to life, until we seek help?

I know there will be some very valid reasons amongst us, and I am definitely pro choice in all matters relating to female health. However, too many friends, family members, clients, patients will tell me they are really struggling, yet they are reluctant to try natural hormones, or even to seek other support.

The answer for me personally was simply, I didn’t know anything about it.

However, I do remember that when it was first mentioned, I instantly shut it down ‘don’t be stupid I’m only 38 it can’t be’. I almost felt angry at the idea that someone would insult me by suggesting it!!

When I finally did seek help and was prescribed HRT I put my prescription in the cupboard for a week, and only when I was caught in yet another 3am spiral of anxiety, crying and some pretty horrific thoughts, did I think right, enough is enough!

On reflection what I was feeling in those moments was shame.

Shame that when I looked in the mirror I saw a young, vibrant woman in her prime. Not an old lady, so how could it be that my body was doing this to me when I felt so young.

What on earth would people think? None of my friends spoke about it. I was in a new relationship, what would he think about dating a Perimenopausal woman? (Turns out he didn’t mind it at all as 4 years on we are now engaged) 💍

But you know what I have learnt over the years. Shame exists in all of us, for all kinds of reasons and shame is dangerous.

The only way to deal with shame is to name it, frame it and own it.

Once you do that it’s GONE. Just like that!

So, very soon after I put on my first patch, and experienced that first wave of relief and the emergence of the old me coming back, I started talking (shouting mostly) about it openly with friends, family, colleagues, my social media, literally anyone who would listen!

I am so proud of myself for that - because by ridding myself of the shame, I have made space to learn, and through learning and embracing this new chapter of my life I have been able to help others do the same - what a gift!

So, my message to anyone reading this who is suffering but hasn’t yet reached out for support is maybe ponder these questions;

What’s more important than living a long, healthy, happy life?

If you were deficient in iron, or vitamin D would you think twice about taking a supplement?

How often has your body been there to carry you through the hard times in life? Does it deserve to be given a little back?

What is it about seeking support that makes you resist it? (Being too busy doesn’t count)

There is no right or wrong answers to any of these questions, but sometimes reflecting on something like this can help you to see things though a different lens. Help you to prioritise YOU! Because you deserve that!

So, I wonder is one of the major reasons shame? Or is it something else? I’d love to hear your thoughts on this.

Hi Everyone we will be attending this drop in tomorrow and taking with us the results of the experience surveys gathered so far.

When we speak to leaders, we get a sense that they don't actually believe us when we tell them access to basic menopause care is still being refused in real day to day practice.

If anyone would like to attend with us you'd be more than welcome but we realise thats a big ask and we're more than happy to represent your voices.

What we would like to ask though, is that if you haven't already, please do consider completing an experience survey - every single one of our voices matters and if we want things to change we can't sit and wait for others to change it for us. Trust us we have tried that one!
Thank you for all your support 🩵
Here is the link, it takes 2 mins and it makes a difference 💪🏼

"If your GP says it's not perimenopause... it isn't."

Not always.

Perimenopause doesn't have a single blood test that can rule it in or out. Diagnosis is usually based on your symptoms, your age, your menstrual history and a conversation about what's been changing.

Every woman deserves to be listened to, taken seriously and involved in decisions about her own health.

If you've walked away from an appointment still feeling like something isn't right, don't ignore that feeling.

Keep asking questions.
Keep learning.
Keep advocating for yourself.

Knowledge isn't about challenging clinicians...
It's about becoming an active partner in your own healthcare. 💙

Do you have a ‘place’?

A place where you can just ‘be’ with yourself. No distractions. No drama. Just peace?

If you’re reading this thinking ‘I don’t have time for ‘peace’ - maybe you could offer that thought some gentle curiosity….🤔

If you have yours we’d love to hear about it?

How often have you said

"I'll do it when I've lost the weight."

"I'll wear that next summer."

"Don't post that picture"

For so many women, especially during perimenopause and menopause, changes to our bodies can have a huge, detrimental effect on our self confidence.

This week's Wellbeing Wednesday is all about body kindness, self-compassion and learning to love the body you have.

I've shared something a little more personal over in our SHE Social community today, and if you've ever struggled with body confidence, I think you might relate.

✨ Come and join us. We'd love to hear your story too.
