A huge congratulations to our latest DAISY Award winner, Charge Nurse Akhil! 💚

Part of his nomination read:

“Although my mother sadly passed away, Akhil’s kindness and professionalism made an incredibly difficult time more bearable for our family.

“He cared for my mother with genuine dignity, respect and compassion, ensuring she was comfortable and treated as a person and not just a patient.

“He took the time to explain what was happening, answered our questions with patience and offered reassurance when we felt overwhelmed. His calm presence, empathy and understanding helped us through the hardest moments of our lives.

“He made a lasting difference during one of the most painful experiences of our lives, and we will never forget his kindness.”

Last Friday night, the Outstanding Service and Care Awards celebrated some of the incredible people at UHCW who go above and beyond to make a difference to others.

We were delighted to see our wonderful Chaplain, Brian McDonald, named UHCW Charity Supporter of the Year. Brian quite literally went above and beyond for our Neonatal Ward, taking to the skies for a skydive before tackling an abseil down Coventry Cathedral, all to raise vital funds for the ward.

The UHCW Charity Inspirational Fundraiser Award went to the remarkable Lydia Herring-Matusiak. Despite living with Multiple Myeloma, Lydia took on the extraordinary challenge of running the full 84 miles of Hadrian’s Wall, raising funds for the Ward 34 Day Unit team who have cared for her throughout her treatment.

Lydia’s strength, determination and incredible outlook on life are an inspiration, and a powerful reminder of just how much life there is to live.

A huge congratulations to Brian and Lydia and thank you for everything you have done to support UHCW Charity and our patients.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the UK, with around 1 in 7 women expected to be diagnosed during their lifetime. Early detection can make a significant difference, which is why knowing what is normal for you and seeking advice if you notice any changes is so important.

This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we're highlighting just some of the ways your support has helped enhance breast care services at UHCW, from specialist equipment used in diagnosis and surgery to resources that help raise awareness and provide information to patients.

Continued support helps us invest in improvements like these, enhancing services for patients and staff across our hospitals.

Keep an eye out for our Breast Screening Team in the main foyer, where they'll be raising awareness, sharing information and answering questions about breast screening and breast health.

For families experiencing baby loss, having a dedicated space to spend precious time together can make all the difference.

These families helped make our new Maternity Bereavement Suite possible through their fundraising and support. Here, they share why a dedicated bereavement space is so important and the difference it will make for parents and loved ones facing the heartbreak of losing a baby.

Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, UHCW Charity was proud to fund the décor and furnishings within the suite, helping to create a peaceful, welcoming environment away from the main labour ward.

Created with families, for families, this space will support parents and loved ones when they need it most.

This Baby Loss Awareness Week, we want to shine a light on our incredible fundraisers who, despite experiencing the heartbreak of baby loss themselves, have turned their pain into something truly meaningful by helping other families facing the same devastating loss.

Through their incredible generosity and tireless fundraising over the past couple of years, they have helped fund the furnishings and decor for our brand-new Maternity Bereavement Suite, which opened just weeks ago. Drawing on their own experiences, many of these families also shared invaluable advice, helping shape the suites to include thoughtful touches that they hope will bring comfort to other parents facing the heartbreak of baby loss.

This dedicated space offers families a quiet, soundproofed room away from the main labour ward, where they can spend precious time together, make memories and say goodbye in a peaceful, private and supportive environment.

No family should have to face the heartbreak of baby loss, but thanks to these remarkable families and supporters, those who do will have a safe space to navigate some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

To every family and supporter who helped make this possible, thank you. Your kindness and compassion will make a lasting difference to families at a time when they need it most.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for our Coffee Morning on 25th September!☕

Together, supporters of UHCW Charity and Macmillan helped raise an amazing £832.88, which will be shared equally between both charities.

From delicious cakes and sweet treats to generous donations, every contribution helped make the morning such a success. Thank you to everyone who donated, volunteered and came along to support us.

Your kindness will help both charities continue supporting people when they need it most💚

Today is World Mental Health Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness of mental health and encouraging open conversations.

This year's theme, "Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change" highlights the importance of listening to and learning from people's experiences of mental health.

Mental health is an important part of our overall wellbeing, and everyone experiences challenges from time to time. Whether it's checking in with a friend, reaching out for support, or simply taking a moment to look after yourself, small actions can make a big difference.

Today, and every day, let's help create a culture where people feel comfortable talking, listening and supporting one another💚

This next week is Baby Loss Awareness Week; a time for anyone affected by pregnancy or baby loss to come together, share their experiences and remember the babies who are gone too soon.

At UHCW, our Faith Centre will be holding a special Coming Together afternoon, where everyone is welcome to talk, connect and find comfort in the company of others who understand. Most importantly, it’s a chance to remind one another that no one has to face baby loss alone.

There will also be a special service at 6.30pm on Thursday 15th October. And at 7pm on 15th October, wherever you are, you are invited to light a candle at home, or wherever you feel comfortable, in memory of all the babies who are loved and missed every day🕯️

Whether you have experienced baby loss yourself, are supporting someone who has, or simply want to stand alongside those who are grieving, you are welcome to join us❤️

A huge congratulations and thank you to Richard for taking on the incredible London to Paris Cycle Challenge in support of our Critical Care Unit.

Covering hundreds of miles across two countries, Richard embraced an unforgettable adventure, describing the experience as exhilarating, rewarding and fun. His determination and commitment throughout the challenge have resulted in an amazing £3,247.25 being raised to support Critical Care.

Taking on a challenge of this scale is a remarkable achievement, and Richard's fundraising efforts will help us continue supporting patients, families and staff at UHCW.
