With the weather improving and livestock returning to the fields, now is the time to make sure your fencing is in good condition. There’s nothing more frustrating than animals finding a weak spot and escaping, turning a normal day into a stressful one.

As a livestock owner, you are responsible for any damage caused if animals get out, which makes well installed, secure fencing essential for both safety and peace of mind.

Lantra’s ‘Fencing and Gate Installation’ course is designed to give you the practical skills and knowledge to install and maintain fencing correctly. It also helps you understand the importance of using the right materials and ensuring quality at every stage.

Operating a forward tipping dumper carries significant responsibility, as incorrect use can present serious risks. Without appropriate training and awareness, incidents involving these machines can result in severe or fatal injuries.

Forward tipping dumpers are essential for transporting materials, often across uneven or unstable ground, which increases the risk of overturning. A thorough understanding of the equipment, completion of effective pre-start checks and following safe operating practices are critical to reducing the likelihood of accidents.

Lantra’s ‘Forward Tipping Dumpers’ course is designed to provide operators the knowledge and confidence required to use these machines safely. The training covers both tracked and wheeled dumpers and reinforces safe working practices in line with industry expectations.

Working with trees forms a core part of many roles, from arboriculture professionals and estate managers to landowners and farmers. Being able to identify potential defects or decline at an early stage is essential to effective risk management and meeting legal responsibilities.

Lantra’s ‘Basic Tree Survey and Inspection’ course designed to support those responsible for trees in recognising damaged, defective or diseased trees. This one-day course provides practical guidance on identifying visible signs of concern, alongside an overview of health and safety considerations, risk assessment principles and the relevant legal framework.

Landowners have a legal responsibility for any damage caused by a tree that fails or falls. Where a potential issue is identified during an inspection, it is the landowner’s duty to ensure that appropriate action and proportionate action is taken.

The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) has updated its Code of Practice for the Safe Use of Industrial Trucks, now impacting agricultural use.

Operators of telescopic handlers/loaders must now have formal training and certification when using machines for lifting “unit loads” (eg pallet forks, bale grabs).

This applies to farmers, contractors, and employees. While handling loose materials (eg silage) is not included, general training requirements still apply.

The HSA will be enforcing this during inspections and will now require evidence that any person operating the telescopic loader on a farm, has completed the necessary training in the safe use of telescopic loaders.

Lantra offers a ‘Rough Terrain Telescopic Lift Truck’ course which covers the requirements of the updated Code of Practice, if you would like to learn more visit https://lantra.co.uk/course/rough-terrain-telescopic-lift-trucks/

April is a time when many farmers are turning their attention back to crop management. Sprayers are brought out of storage, plans are made for the season ahead, and after a long winter it can be tempting to just pick up where you left off last year, using the same products, same approach and the same routine.

However, this isn’t always the best approach when it comes to pesticide use.
