We recently hosted some more of the dedicated volunteers from the BBMF Visitor Centre. We were also very grateful to local artist Mr Geoff Browne who donated one of his paintings which now hangs on the wall in the centre.

A highly recommended local museum at Frieston Shore, just up from Boston. Their recent restoration of a Hurricane built for the Battle Of Britain film is a must see.

The Hawker Hurricane replica, built for The Battle of Britain film, is now on show in Lincolnshire.

The tragic loss of the crew of Geoffery Appleyard DFM in the early hours of the 26 July 1942, is only one reminder that behind every name is a family. Those families remember, the RAF family remembers….we will remember them.

At this time of year we pause to remember those lost on active service during conflicts since 1914. The loss of a family member was of course deeply felt, sadly there are many case of two or more members of the same family being killed.

Peter Nutt was a Wireless Operator in a 97 Squadron Manchester lost on 15 May 1941 flying from RAF Coningsby on a mission to Berlin. His brother Ken died when his 201 Squadron Sunderland crashed off the coast of Ireland in February 1942. These two airmen have no known grave and are one of at least 28 pairs of brothers remembered on the Air Forces Memorial at Runnymede.

A third brother, James, was lost on the night of 1/2 June 1942 during one of the 1,000 bomber raids, to Essen. He was in a Wellington of No 18 Operational Training Unit.
On his headstone in Rheinberg War Cemetery in Germany the family said,

'In memory of Jimmy and his two brothers Peter & Kenneth, Mother, Father and Geof.’

👀. Our connection to Metheringham was established during the Second World War as they were grouped as part of 54 Base which had its HQ here at RAF Coningsby. The Metheringham Airfield Visitor Centre tells the story of 106 Squadron and the FIDO airfield there. Their visitor centre is highly recommended for a visit and run by highly knowledgeable and friendly staff.

Some of our were privileged to be invited to the excellent Coningsby Aviation Heritage Centre at the weekend.

Such a fascinating place as 106 Squadron were based at RAF Coningsby during WW2 prior to RAF Syerston and finally RAF Metheringham.

Our latest addition to the centre is a full size replica of an Avro Manchester cockpit panel, hand crafted by Mr Proctor, one of our whole force volunteers who works for Retro track & Air supporting BBMF. This was made entirely from scratch using original design drawings and a variety of methods which included 3D printing.
This now sits alongside his previous Handley Page Hampden cockpit panel. Both these panels represent our first two aircraft types to operate from RAF Coningsby.
